The Smokescreen Theory

Who is everybody? Former coaches? Former GMs?

Every team has a draft strategy, they go out to the combine and Pro Days, records times, drills, etc... It's called evaluating talent and again, teams don't just look at one player from the college, they look at multiple players at various positions, again, it's called evaluating. Once they determine where all the players rank on their draft board, it is a deck of cards from there... I'll admit, there is a little smokscreening during the actual draft process because the draft is unpredictable and teams just don't know who will make a gamble and jump in front but again, a team has to be completely stupid to look at just one player because they are trying to signal smoke.

lol...

What razor said, along with just about every present or former team official, draft guru, draft guru wannabe, etc. when discussing this time of year. And yes, all teams do their due diligence on pretty much every player, however, not all evaluations are created equal. Teams do not bring everyone in for a formal workout or take each player out to dinner, or have a two hour meeting with all draft eligible players. In fact, contact with most players is limited to a quick discussion at the combine or pro-day, along with the film work and scouting reports.

So while it is expected and no big deal to have cursory contact with a player, the extra attention given to certain players will highlight exactly what the team's plans are unless they do something to throw other teams off. Usually this is done by working out or having extended contact with players the team is not necessarily targeting or going the opposite direction and not showing any special interest in a player they really covet (like the Panthers did with Beason). All teams want to muddy the water in order to throw everyone off the trail of what they're really doing.

it's a fact that it is done and done frequently by most if not all teams. not much room for opinion there.....but whatever. it's like saying that salespeople exaggerate and poker players bluff. that's part of the game. i don't know how you can take all of those quotes and statements i posted and doubt that it happens. just too funny that you can look at all that and still say it is a matter of opinion that it happens.

You stick by your quotes and statements, I will stick by my side... Obviously, you and I share very different views. You could be right but I am not a person that likes to lose a debate, argument, whatever you want to call it. Sorry for sounding like a complete ass but I am not a person who just calls it even...

The best thing I think we can do is just let this thread die, isn't that the best thing to do? Cause obviously we will continue to argue our case, regardless if you think I don't have one.

I laugh as you get more PO'd cause people don't agree with you. Smoke screens have been around for years. The scenarios can go on and on. Teams with the overall #1 pick hinting they are going to take a player another team desperately wants. Get them to trade their pick for that #1 pick and also gain additional picks. In the meantime get exactly who they wanted all along.

Smokescreens are as much part of the draft as the actual picks.

Actually, what is most laughable is the fact that you think I am getting pissed off about this. I am no where even near pissed off with anyone with forum because unlike some of the newcomers that come on this board and take offense because someone doesn't see eye-to-eye with you, I actually just take it in. I've been on this forum long enough to know not to take things so personal on this forum, even when someone doesn't agree with you.

Furthermore, it isn't like anyone is insulting me or I am insulting them, it is just a friendly debate, whether you consider it one or not.

Again, I am not going take anything personal on here. I respect all huddle members and that includes Rayzor.

OK however you spin it. "Believe what you want to believe" sounds a little irrirated that all aren't on your belief.

I assume you are talking about someone else when you say "newcomer" cause I have been around for many moons in this forum.

    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
    • The lack of production is especially surprising given how much effort the team put into coaxing the best from him.  In just six short years he’s had the opportunity to work with 3 different GMs, 7 different head coaches and 10 different starting quarterbacks.  There’s literally no excuse to be made that one of those combos didn’t work.  It might be time to look withIAN.
    • I would say maybe 8 in a tier by themselves and all but 2 where picked in the top of the first allen pat m stroud burrow jackson hurts (maybe) Herbert Stafford
