Who will be our starting 4 on the defensive line?

The Question

Recommended Posts

I see us rotating in the dline a lot more. I will give who i think will start and who will be the top reserves.

DE- Brown, draft pick

NT- Leonard, Tank

UT- Ed, Irvin

DE- Johnson, Brock

We could target Austen Lane or CJ Wilson depending on if we are looking for another pass rusher or a run stopper. But it won't be in the 2nd more likely the 3rd or later even. The reason being is we are looking for a DE to rotate in and as depth not a starter. We have Brown and Charles Johnson. In the 2nd our target should be a WR/KR that can contribute fairly quickly.

ed is a ut?

Well he sure as hell is not a NOSE. Not at 295. He may have been a over or nose on indy's line but here in Carolina we like our NT's a little bigger. Leonard and Tank are 330 or so. SO... yes Ed will likely play the under.

Yea knowing Fox a DT will be the Panthers first pick but I really disagree because a good WR is a lot harder to find I believe and they have other options at that position than a rookie. A WR on the other hand is the most needed position because there fewer options AND the Panthers new QB is going to need one.

Tank is not 330 pounds..And Ed may or may not be 295 he was up too 315 in indy at one time but IDK what the panthers want to do with him

how could he answer his own question with what YOU said?

lol. Because I didn't answer it! He said what would the front 4 look like. I told him it would look like what he already stated because I didn't think there was any other option.

I really don't know how it was hard to understand what I initially typed. :P

Still a chance Brayton gets a 2yr or so deal.

DT is pretty fine IMO. Time for those young guys to get some playing time.

End has me worried, bringing Brayton back would end a lot of problems as he can play multiple spots.

Mr. Ed would most likely be the rotational NT on passing downs. I would put NT in quotations because both DTs are usually one-gapping at that point but, meh. In the past, we've kicked C. Johnson or Brayton down to DT on passing downs. It doesn't look like CJ will be doing that this year. This is how I see our defensive line with the current personnel.

Std D, currently avgs 40% of all plays in the nfl. We used less base defense last year than I've ever seen. In this pass happy league, this trend will likely continue.

LDE - Charles Johnson

NT - Louis Leonard

UT - Tank Tyler, Corey Irvin rotates in for at both positions

RDE - Everett Brown

Nickel, pass bias #1, currently avgs most of the remaining 60%

LDE - Charles Johnson, Everette Brown (takes 1/3 of snaps at LDE when Taylor is at RDE)

DT - Ed Johnson

DT - Tank Tyler, Corey Irvin rotates in at both positions

RDE - Everett Brown, Hilee Taylor (actually takes 2/3 of snaps, 1/3 to spell Brown, 1/3 to spell C. Johnson)

Dime, pass bias #2, 3 man front

LDE - Charles Johnson

NT - Ed Johnson

RDE - Everette Brown

^Simplistic view, there are many variations of these three simple defensive schemes, also, there would most likely be some bleedover to even out snaps and keep our most effective players on the field.

In most of our games the past 2 years, we've kept 3 DE and 4 NT active on game day, I'm assuming it will continue. Even with only 3 active, it's pretty easy to see DE is the position most in need of an upgrade. I managed to do that without including Hayden, but the team most likely will (include him). DL talent is a primary need. Even if all those guys above are considered starters, we have no injury depth. Irvin, Hayden and Taylor are all question marks.

Edit - utterly agree with teh Kurb about Brayton.

We're definitely getting a Dlineman our first pick. Weather it's a End or Tackle depends on whose on the board and who we think could help the most.

we r taking a wr first pick, bank on it,

front 4:

Brown

Tyler

Johnson

Johnson

and if we manage to re-sign brayton he will rotate with ed johnson on the inside:hat:
