Richard Marshall Question

munnerlynn is just fine.

for a late round pick and a rookie he's awesome. then add in the height....you can't realistically ask for much more. how can anyone deny the obvious talent and grit this guy has? once the game slows down for him he's going to be one of the best. of anyone on this roster he could be a shutdown corner.

btw....i'd like to be keeping marshall but if we get a 2nd for him i won't be terribly upset.

Where did he say that at?

Two years ago, he stated that he expected to be the highest paid CB in the league.

This is not uncommon. Marshall is a good player. However, they base their salary expectations on better players. He is prob looking at Gamble's deal and wants equal or more. The Panthers are not going to give that to him...nor do I think he is worth it.

This is a win-win for the Panthers.

Marshall talks to teams:

1. Someone overpays him...we let him go and take a 2nd rd pick. This is OK, because he would have walked next year for nothing....assuming another team valued himmore.

2. He gets a reasonable offer...we match and lock him up.

3. He gets no offers...his value is set by the league and gives us an advantage in future contract negotiations.

Inside the Panthers" has reported that Marshall was one of the highest rated CB tacklers in the NFL last season (4th I think), with only 4 missed tackles out of 71.

I can't remember who wrote it, but a couple of weeks ago it was reported that many Restricted Free Agents, who would normally have been Unrestricted Free Agents, won't sign their tenders, or workout, before they have to (I can't remember the date, maybe April or May, I think I posted about it) in protest. Until that date the players can't be fined for not participating, but after that date their tender can be reduced to only 110% of their 09 salary.

Marshall is one of those players who is all about the money. His agent Rosenhouse is not an agent who advises players to hold out, matter of fact I believe he is against it unless absolutely neccessary. I would say this is coming from Marshall. Holding out, is definately not a way to go about getting a new contract, in my opinion.

Marshall probably wants Top 5 CB money...yet, his talent does not warrant it.

The rest of the NFL is doing our work for us. They are helping to establish his market, so we don't have to get into a rough negotiation with him.

Now that he is holding out of offseason conditioning program its kinda hard to think it want end bad. He is prob pissed that we didnt tag him with a high tender. Or ether he is trying to drive up his stock so he will get traded. Ether way he dose not seem to want to be a Panther anymore.

I don't think that he doesn't want to be a Panther, but wants more money. And by placing a 2nd round tender on him the Panthers will likely match any other teams offer to keep him on the team, this was a good strategy to save money by the FO.

Skipping Off-season training is a sign that he is not happy. He very well may want a large contract and knows now he will be ether trapped in Carolina, will have to play out his rookie deal, or get moved for maybe lower then he wants to play for.

He skipped a voluntary session.

I don't know if I would go as far as say he is holding out.

Agreed.

another team offers him a good contract, and we match it.

When he was still the nickel back (I guess this was before the 2008 season), the Panthers offered him a nice contract (something like 5 mil a year), which he turned down.

It is about the money for Marshall.

What the difference? Both mean he is not attending the workout.

Yea I agree and thats why I feel its gonna end bad ether way. He wants top 10 money right now and the only thing that will make him happy will be top 10 money.
