QB pressures/hurries from 2009

Carolina. The Panthers go with the term “quarterback pressures’’ and their numbers are dramatically higher than Atlanta’s. Not sure if that’s a case of Carolina having a better pass rush or the coaches being more generous in their breakdowns. Whatever the case, former Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers was credited with a team-best 35 pressures. Former Carolina defensive tackle Damione Lewis was next with 21. Those guys are gone, but here’s something encouraging for those wondering about the future of Carolina’s defensive line: Defensive end Everette Brown had 16 pressures in a part-time role in his rookie season. Charles Johnson, another guy who now has a chance to be a starter, had 12 pressures in a part-time role. Tyler Brayton, who started last season and seems destined to end up elsewhere as a free agent, had 14 pressures.

These numbers aren't official, and aren't tracked but apparently this is what some of our assistant coaches saw in the film room.

The one thing that surprised me most is that Brown had so many pressures with such a limited role.

All I know is, when Everette Brown was on the field, he was ALWAYS around the ball. Even plays 20 yards down the field, I remember seeing Brown around the tackle. All he has to do is get stronger in the offseason. I remember he had a sack on Freeman but couldnt take him down. I know Freeman is a big boy but Brown needs to throw him down.

The way our defense plays, just him forcing a bad throw is better than a sack in my opinion. Increases a chance for a turnover.

That's what I liked about him, he was always able to create pressure.

Given that we are losing 70 pressures by guys no longer on the team, Brown and Johmson has better be nasty this year. It will hard for those two to fill the void.

On a related note I thought it was interesting that Lewis was second in hurries given that the general opinion seems to be that he never got penetration and put pressure on the passer.

Look at who turned into Mr. Negative. What happened to trusting Fox.

I do trust Fox. Right now I don't trust Richardson to give Fox the tools he needs to win this year. But Hurney may show the doubters how good he actually is if he can rummage around in the bargain basement and the lower rounds of the draft and undrafted free agents to pull out a few rabbits from his hat and turn lemons into lemonade.

Hurney is an excellent drafter, I believe he can make it happen. Last year we had our hands tied with Peppers/Jakes enormous salaries, as well as injury after injury after injury and we still managed to put up a .500 record.

Fact is, we may be losing Peppers, but we're also gaining a healthy Thomas Davis. A lot of people forget that.

Keep in mind, Pep was doubled an awful lot, which makes it easier for others to get to the QB. I doubt any of our D-Line gets double this year. I hope CJ and EB can handle the pressure of having to be IT now. Because...they have to be it. Our it is gone.

This is bullsh*t! Damn you and your good logic! Pep is a lazy bum son of a bitch!

    • He doesn't need to play in 2025. And maybe not 2026 either from what I've read. This is but one peer-reviewed selection:    "A devastating complication of returning to sport following ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is a second ACL injury. Strong evidence now indicates that younger, more active athletes are at particularly high risk for a second ACL injury and this risk is greatest within the first two years following ACLR." https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5226931/     Regarding your first question... "The optimal timing of ACLR is an important clinical decision that affects patient outcomes significantly. Even though there is no consensus in the literature, there are some trends regarding timing of ACLR. Various authors suggest that ACLR be performed at least 3 weeks after injury in order to avoid arthrofibrosis. More important than time alone, objective criteria including perioperative swelling, edema, hyperthermia, and ROM are important indicators of when surgery should be performed." https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4004131/#:~:text=The optimal timing of ACLR is an important clinical decision,in order to avoid arthrofibrosis.
    • Not sure I would be so sure they feel worse than us - their QB was better than Bryce at in the first season, they got DJ Moore, and 2 more high caliber draft picks.  We had to give up basically our entire defense this season indirectly to make that happen and we still have no true #1 WR.  Not saying I would rather have Caleb over Bryce at this point - but I would rather have their team situation and draft picks hands down.
    • A lot of people think this draft is weak at QB--I think, after the first five picks of the first round, there are a ton of developmental QBs who could develop into the role--here is the psychology behind it--Bryce becomes the mentor--you can learn as much by teaching others than by being taught.   It also makes him a true leader.  But I think there are a few QB in this draft that might not be ready now, but in 2 years, could be NFL starting QBs--Howard, Rourke, Ewers, Milroe, Dart, etc.  Talk about a cheaper backup and one that could evolve into trade capital--or if Bryce can't find consistency-his replacement.  Round 3 will have some of these qbs--maybe early day 3.
