Steve Smith or Larry Fitzgerald

Recommended Posts

Steve Smith.

Fitzgerald is an amazing WR as well however there is something different about Steve Smith. He plays as if he is pissed off and is always very aggressive and passionate about the games. You don't see many guys visually pissed off when they play anymore. Because they are getting paid either way and don't care. Steve Smith cares.

Fitzgerald has 18 more receptions, while only having 10 more yards than Smith. You guys suspended your running game this season, so of course your receiver is going to have more touchdowns. Steve Smith also has two less games while, again, having only 10 less yards. His average per game and average per reception are superior, which shows he does more with less.

Both receivers put up great numbers this season, and don't get me wrong, they're both incredible talents. I just don't think Fitz's numbers really warrant all this talk about him being the better receiver on a freakin' panthers messageboard. :P

True but your not taking into account he is the only wideout worth a darn on your team so of course he is going to have the most yards. We split the ball accross 3 1000 yard receivers 2 of which are in the pro bowl.

Listen Steve is an unbelievable wide out and is deffinatly top 5 but every person in the media/coaches/players state Fitz is the best in the league.

It doesn't matter if you guys spread the ball around if you threw 50000x more than we threw the ball, resulting in your 3rd receiver having only one less reception than our number 1 target. I see we won't reach an agreement though. We both love our team's receivers, so we'll just have to agree to disagree. :)

best in the league? Let's not become homers now. Neither of our receivers hold that title right now.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know everyone is trying their best not to be a homer, but c'mon. We have a guy that since the 05 season is definetely a top 2 or 3 reciever in the league.

Has fitz won a triple crown uh no. He is a great reciever but the explosiveness of smith can be matched by no reciever in the league. Even ronde barber said that smith and moss are the only two recievers that they change their coverages for. If smith played on a pass happy offense can u imagine the numbers he would put up. Steve Young said if he would have played on his team he would have caught 140 balls a year. THATS SICK.

The man deserves more appreciation from the people here saying that you would trade him straight up for fitz or boldin wtf are you serious anyway just my opinion so whatever.

Posted in this discussion elsewhere...

We've had this discussion before, and I'll repeat my thoughts again.

When comparing two players, one of the first things I look to see is whether either one does something that the other can't do.

Fitzgerald is a great receiver; good routes, great hands, uses his body well, all of that. Buuut you could say all of those things about Steve Smith too.

Smith also is capable of taking a short pass, a reverse or a direct snap and turning them into huge gains with his speed and elusiveness. Fitzgerald, as good a receiver as he is, doesn't really have that element in his game.

(and that's not even figuring in the special teams aspect)

So for that reason, I take Steve Smith. No homerism involved, just logic.

How does he not have better numbers

Rk Player Team Pos Rec Yds Avg Yds/G Lng TD 20+ 40+ 1st 1st% FUM

Larry Fitzgerald ARI WR 96 1,431 14.9 89.4 78T 12 20 5 66 68.8 1

Steve Smith CAR WR 78 1,421 18.2 101.5 65T 6 23 6 59 75.6 1

Looks loke more yards twice the td same amount of fumbles. mind you we have another pro bowl wide out stealing someof his numberson the other side named Boldin. You may have heard of him

Fitzgerald is on a pass-happy team and played a full season. Smith is on a run-happy team and was suspened for 2 games and yet he pretty much equaled Fitgerald in total yards with 2 less games and a lot less receptions.

Also as far as touchdowns go, I have had a pet peeve with this all season.

Steve is showing that he CAN indeed keep his temper in check, because in all honesty, almost HALF of D'Will's touchdowns are chip shots thanks to Smith getting us all the way down the field in the red zone, with Williams punching it in for the go ahead TD.

I honestly lost track of how many times after a big play from Steve, we are in the red zone and we hand the ball to Williams for the touchdown, when if we had some more balls and faith in Delhomme, we should at least given Steve the opportunity on one of the downs for the TD.

Seriously, Steve has kind of been sacrificed in that respect and it's thanks to him that Williams numbers look so good. But let's be honest, THEY were not all EARNED by Williams. Steve had just as much to do with his TD's as did Williams.

In short Smith has been short-changed this season, and it seems he's been pretty good about it. Had it been someone like TO, you wouldn't hear the end of it.

So in reality, had you actually watched every Panthers game this season, you would know that unofficially Smith could have EASILY had something like 18TD by now. Unfortunatelly for him he will have to wait until we either have more faith in Delhomme next year, or get another QB, which probably won't happen until Smith is past his prime.

PS: Don't get me wrong Panther Fans, I love Delhomme, I just wonder sometimes what Steve's numbers would have been like had we had an Elite QB like Manning or Brady, or had he himself been on a team like the Pats or Colts. His career numbers would have no doubt been a lot more impressive.

"Fitzgerald is on a pass-happy team and played a full season."

Come on man, Fitz has been crazy good his whole career, it's not like this was just an abomination, a "break-out year".

For me it's an irrelevant toss up. It's like asking if I could have a night with this miss-universe girl or that one... I really dont think you can lose either way. lol :)

I have seen Steve Smith burn the Cardinals deep far too many times to say that anyone is better than him. Honestly I would put them both one or two notches above everyone else in the league and as far as who's better? I dont think I know enough about anything to make that decision.

I do know that Fitz was still wowing the league when he had Josh McCown (who?) and Matt Leinart throwing to him, but Smith has had Delhomme pretty much his whole career. (I've seen quite a few posts on your board that were pretty harsh towards Jake, do your fans not like him? Honestly I've always respected him from what I've seen and thought he's a pretty dang good QB.. You guys did go to the SuperBowl right?)

My gut feeling is that Fitz is better prior to the catch, and Smith is far and away better after the catch.

why is this even a debate? ok both are great at WR but this is where smitty trumps fitz, smitty is faster, can be and has been a punt returner(remember that nfc championship game at he seahawks?) smith is a better blocker(remember that bloc vs the bucs on MNF?) finally smith is the best clutch WR in the league, period!!!!!! not T.O, moss, fitz burress, ward or anybody else, when its clutch time its steve smith time panther fans know that everybody knows that. how many times has he bailed us out and wowed us at the same time?

Now if im starting a franchise(that was the question this thread asked) i would go with fitz simply coz of his age but not bcoz he is better that smith

    • Film Room Playlist _ NFL Pro — Mozilla Firefox 2024-11-25 10-20-11.mp4 🎯🎯🎯 There were a couple of "fans" yesterday saying that this wasn't a helmet-to-helmet shot... 👀 Looks like based on where Moore was and where the play ended, he'd have gotten maybe just a yard or two more. Chuba was downed at the KC 16 and Moore was on his way back to the QB, so the offense got what they could for the most part. After reviewing the all-22, Bryce made the right call here. Tremble was the hot and KC sent both LBs. He gets it out with a clear pocket but it's quickly collapsing. If there was a little more time it looked like AT came free at the end but whether or not Bryce would've been upright still is another story. Smart move to get the completion and keep the field goal in play to stay alive. George Karlaftis is about to get himself a big ole hug and Bryce heaves it to where David Moore is going. Trent McDuffie slipped just a step or two before this shot, but we can see the clear DPI here as he's wrapped around David Moore before knocking him over as the ball gets there.
    • I’m taking a TE early day 3 Ian Thomas and Tremble are FA.  We should have no desire to bring them back.   There’s more than enough film of ball bouncing off their hands or facemask.
    • Daniel Jones sometimes would sling it for 300 or 400 yards.  That's my stance.  We know what Bryce is.  If you consistently play any QB at this level, they largely are going to end up w/ some good days/games.  last time Mahomes was at BOA, Teddy Bridgwater threw for 300+ yards and a couple TDs and the Matt Rhule Panthers almost took him down.  We know what Bryce is.  Now we got people predictably falling into a predictable trap.
