Burns would be in his prime on a 5 year deal. The issue is investing in a player that might not be as invested as you want.

How do you statistically measure run stopping? Because Brian Burns had 16 tackles for a loss last season, 12th in the league for EDGE defenders. This, of course, is with arguably the least talented team in Panthers history where they were also the first team in the league to be eliminated from playoff contention.

Are we really going to fault Burns for taking care of his body when the team, for a majority of the season, had a single win?

Well there it is.  Does he seem like a dude who's going to fight until years 4 and 5 when maybe we're competitive?  Or does he seem like a dude who'll be "hurt" when it actually matters?

Something I had no idea until I looked at our contracts is that we signed Jordan Matthews this past year.

Crazy, he was so promising early in PHI (3 seasons in a row over 800 yards) and found his way back on a roster in SF after a position switch to TE.

Isn’t he Jerry Rice’s nephew? I wonder if we draft his cousin and extend him for a family reunion.
 

I actually have Jordan Matthew’s autograph because his worked with my dad in Georgia. He really fizzled out fast. Had to be injuries.

Poor drafting.. maybe talent acquisition as well.. only 4 of those players have double digit years of experience either. Def need to draft better forsure.

Our poor drafting is reason #1 we are in this mess....poor trades is #2.....poor FA signings #3.....all of those point to Fitt, so hopefully we see major improvement.

I would use the Non-Exclusive Tag on Burns.  Let him negotiate with other teams and if they make him an offer, we can either match it and keep him or refuse and get two 1st round picks for him.  Win / Win for us.  If another team thinks he's worth 2 first than they can offer him the 30 million he's asking for.  If a team offers him basically what we are offering him, we can match the offer and we get him for what we were offering all along.

Brown doesn't?  You can take the emotional approach and I would agree, but in the era of salary cap moves, which is the point of the thread, you may not be able to keep what you want.  I do think, however, if we cut the entire bottom half of our roster, most would not be signed to other teams.

I think he meant Brown, not Burns. It would be just like the Panthers to trade Brown and pay Burns double what he's worth.

if he was on his rookie deal still, then maybe.  But I seriously doubt a team is going to give up 2 firsts knowing he is going to cost 30 million.   If Burns has come off that number then we might as well try and sign him if its reasonable
