Been listening to a lot of the C3 podcast and Cody has changed my mind on Burns.  I don’t like trading away good players when we don’t have any but Burns wanting 30 mil per range with our current situation doesn’t compute.

Tag and trade feels like a real possibility if some team wants to pay him.  I want picks and a first absolutely has to be included.  It’s time to move him.

He is legit worth 22-24 range but that’s overpaid IMO.  He is definitely the best player in free agency with his age and talent and we have to cash that in

Josh Allen from Jax is way ahead of Burns. He had 17.5 sacks, 2x as many qb pressures and is a good run defender. Chris Jones is also a FA and Hunter.

Burns isn't the top FA

In free agency, regarding EDGEs, Burns is second. The Athletic has him as the top FA.

The worst I saw was Fox (of course) which had him at 11. Still, it's relatively high.

I was responding to him saying he was the best player in Free Agency. He's likely 3rd edge

I don't think anyone is arguing that Burns isn't good.  The issue is that he's merely good and wants to be paid like he's elite. In a hard salary cap league that's a problem. We have holes all over our roster. We can't afford to tie up a good chunk of our cap in an overpaid player who is a one trick pony.

We wanted to give him a max crosby type deal around 23ish a year.  Burns wanted 30.  The panthers came all the way up to 27 and burns wanted 30.   fug him and the horse he rode in on.

Gotta agree here - sometimes you gotta let go - shoulda traded him and we missed, but now we have to get the trade done as best we can.

he is not operating in good faith, add that he took last year off I say get what you can for him.  Its clear the panthers were trying to get a deal done but he is acting like a child

Yep - that is why I like the non-exclusive tag - let him go try and get his $30M - if he does we get 2 first round picks.  If he doesn't we sign and trade.  But at least we don't let him walk and get nothing more than a late 3rd round pick.

According to Spotrac, they track his performance as earning a contract of $21/yr. Not that they ever end up that way, but I really like how Spotrac breaks it down how they come to that calculation based on production around players in their similar performance bracket.

I thought he missed more time than just a few games, but his best year really was when he had another legit pass rusher on the other side. I love the guy, but he's not a game wrecker without someone else on the other side, at least thus far. But he's 25, so there's still room to grow.

I think up to $25/yr is fair, if we can restructure Moton and make room. But if it comes down to either paying out DB or Burns, I'd honestly go DB. He just has a motor that doesn't quit or slow down, and is a game wrecker without much help. But we'll see how things unfold.

Pretty much where I'm at. We wanted to pay him like Crosby and he isn't as good as Crosby.

I don't even know how this is a discussion. He has always been a complete liability against the run and like others have said, essentially took the entirety of last season off. We should've shipped him off years ago but take what we can get for him this offseason and move on.

The "trading talent away for picks just to use those picks to try and replace them" argument is a good one generally, and certainly would've made sense for Moore or McCaffrey. But Burns is not worth anything approaching or even close to what he thinks he is and likely isn't worth close to what someone would give up in a trade. I wouldn't give him more than $20M and even that is pretty generous. There are so many games where he completely disappears and that's with an elite DT taking a lot of OL attention. Put him on the next plane out.

Someone is lying I just don't know who is. Person is reporting Burns asked for 30 a year and was offered 5 mill 27 mill. Early this year it was reported that the Panthers offered the Crosby contract ~23.5 mill a year

That being said, the Panthers have been DRAGGED this entire year for not trading burns and then "not trying to sign him". If they offered him 5 years 27 mill a year that is a very fair deal and we can stop saying they "didn't do anything to sign him"

Yeah so back to my messages around week 1- Everything I was being told then was that they finally agreed on the $/yr amount but then the guaranteed amount was off. So what Joe is saying correlates with what I had figured. Panthers possibly went to 27m/yr then backed off off on gtd as part of the offer.

    • They gave him franchise QB money. Sorry but if you don't earn it you can be embarrassed.   He's rich he can take it. Stop feeling sorry for people who can't live up to their contract. This isn't a sport to be soft. Daniels deserves to give back some of that money he stole if you ask me.
    • And it was coming off of a bye week. Perhaps he should vacation a bit in Germany in the off season, something certainly seemed to help him there.  No, really... He showed maturation and the possibility that he's turning a corner. That wasn't the NY Giants out there, but the back to back Super Bowl champions with the #3 defense in the league, with them coming off of a prime time loss. And that was a 9-1 team we just played literally down to the last second. Bryce played so well that maybe, maybe he wins over some nay-sayers. It's still early, though, but what a nice breath of fresh air that was. You can win quite a few games if that is your normal performance. It is obvious that we are still on the learning curve, though. But that was one helluva test he just took. Some of these QBs coming out of college just don't have a lot of games under their belts, especially in top end programs. They are perhaps just a year to two years behind center in games that matter before they move up. It can take them some time to hit their stride. We can still be cautious about our future and still celebrate a great game by the kid, though, and we should. He earned the laurels today, or had before they were snatched away at the last second.
