It appears Smith may have indeed forced Jake's release..

Can't blame Smitty at all, he's been making Jake look good for years and Jake made him look bad last year.

Friendship is one thing, they can still hang out during the offseason, but this is business and Jake was dragging Smitty down.

Maybe now that he has a QB that he likes, he won't wait until week 8 to put forth a modicum of effort.

Fat chance

Huh?

Smitty's success is totally dependant on the QB being able to get him the ball and our starting QB for the majority of the year couldn't do that.

If Matt More can play 10% better than Jake did (won't be hard) then you will see a miraculous re-emergance of Smith as one of the elite WR's in the NFL.

It's true... Smitty sucks when the QB can't get him the ball.

I heard Pep say that he would have signed here if he would have known we were going to cut Jake...

Too little, too late once again for the Panthers FO...

Based on the way Pep played at the end of the year last season vs. when Jake was still QB, this may not be far off...

I don't blame Smith, this is a business and it's his livelihood... he needs a QB that can get him the ball and Jake wasn't it.

Smith didn't help Jake at all early in the season. I would venture a guess that Smitty's lethargy directly led to about 5 Jake pics and directly caused us to lose 2 games early in the season.

Come on guys, I thought this was established fact.

He came out slow in 2008 as well. Slow and overweight. Remember the pictures of his belly hanging out as he was trying to turn ken lucas's face inside out? lol

Look, I like the guy okay. I've met him and his family. It's just he's gotten into the habit of lallygagging through the first half of the season.

It's a good thing that him lallygagging > an average receiver's top effort.

If in fact that is the case, good for it. It was obvious for more than just last season that Jake couldn't connect with Steve. Steve is coming to a point in his life that he will be dropping a step, now and again. He is a fireball and can still be a game changer as long as he has someone that can get him the ball. I'm glad, whomever listened to Steve, listened. Thanks Zod for this information.

I think everyone can understand why Smitty might have said this or felt this way, but I find it hilarious that Smitty is basically given free reign to act any way he wants.

Can you imagine Beason demanding a trade if we didn't cut Kemo? Williams demanding a trade if we didn't cut Hoover?

Everyone is so in love with Smith that he gets a free pass for making such comments. I can totally understand why he would feel that way, I just think it's laughable that so many on here are like, "Good for him for stepping up."
