Non-exclusive tag him. Tell him the old offer is the absolute best he’ll get from Carolina and let him go find a team to sign him to better deal. If he does, let him go and get those 2 firsts

That would be wonderful. But who's trading 2 1st + signing Burns for a lot of money?

I see he just posted "Keep Pounding" on Twitter 25 minutes ago.

Yes and I think yesterday he tweeted a pic of him playing against Atlanta last year (home game). As we have found out, social media posts don’t mean anything, but it’s at least some news I guess.

The Panthers will screw this up and get stuck with him. 27 mil per was way too much for what he brings.  That's ridiculous.  If Dan signs Burns he's part of the problem and not the solution.

Yea I dont even think the tag is fair, too much. Still the panthers are in a awful spot- pay far too much or lose one of 4-5 talented players. I dont get burns and all his PR stuff about " i dont like moving, i dont like change, love the panthers, etc  etc"(must be BS) Then he wants QB money for RB value.

His team/agent must have been told by other teams they are willing to drop 30 per.

Burns is only 25 years old with five years of NFL exp. That is rare for any spot especially DE/edge guys. I mean DJ johnson was a 2023 draftee and he was 25 then.

Panthers are going to lose either way it feels like.....

Maybe we get lucky and some GM gets really really drunk at the St. Patty's day party.

Ive heard former GMs talk that hotel bars are where a surprising amount of trades happen, not as much as past years. Most happen at the combine.

Burns is not a player they should throw that kind of money at. Especially with the shape this roster is in. There's only one player on this team that has earned a spot here and the team has apparently forgotten he's even here.

The idea of signing any player from a team that has been as bad as the Panthers have been over past half decade is nonsensical to me. Why on earth would you think continuing that strategy is somehow going to pay off?

I must be talking to crazy people.

i really don't want to pay $20+ mil for burns (tag for him is $23), but if we can get two firsts for him i guess it's worth the risk.

i just don't see that happening.

maybe they can get someone to trade for him for a first this year without having to take the risk of the tag. if someone wants him, they'd probably be willing to jump at the option of only giving up 1 first.

Not possible. He doesn’t have a current contract with CAR. Until they offer the tag, he can’t be traded. No tag and he’s a FA on March 5 at 4PM.

Another fun fact….

If a team makes the decision to tag a player, they can still sign that player to a long-term extension. For example, the Ravens placed the franchise tag on QB Lamar Jackson in 2023, but later negotiated a five-year contract

However, if a new deal is not made by July 15, those players will be forced to play out the year on the tag. If they choose not to sign the tag, they will be ineligible to play for any other team for the entirety of the season.

Nobody is giving up a 1st for a player who turned down 27M and is barely worth 20M(maybe?). Much less a 1st and more. A 2nd at this point would be surprising.

When we trade Burns and he goes off on his new team (and he will), it will be hilarious next year seeing all the threads bashing us for not extending him as our defense tumbles to the bottom.

To clarify, I do think the Panthers might be better off trading him considering the position they have put themselves in.  But Burns is such a better player than he gets credit for on this forum.

It's been 5 seasons. He's exactly the player that he gets credit for on this forum, a very good, sometimes great, but inconsistent pass rusher who consistently overruns, is not strong against the run, and doesn't make splash/game-impacting plays. He is not in that elite tier he wants to be paid like, but his rushing ability is also well above JAG status. $30MM average is silly, $23-25MM is ideal if still feeling like a lot, the $27MM reported number was more than fair.

There’s two ways this plays out at this point. He re-signs with the Panthers for what the team is willing to offer him, and he goes on to be a good but overpaid player, or he is traded. Trading him is by far the better option of the two given the Panthers have the worst roster in the NFL. They won’t get what the Rams offered but they need to take all calls and offers at this point. If they could recoup something akin to a first round pick and young player with first round talent (preferably a WR) they should accept that deal with their balls swinging.

But, this is the Panthers we’re talking about, and there is a third disgustingly awful trash hole option my brain is unable to imagine that is the probable outcome. Probably something like Burns not only signs somewhere else for no compensation but the Panthers trade a pick and their compensatory pick for him to leave. That seems like what is going to happen.

Or he could sign a contract that portends for him to be adequately yet not over-compensated -- or possibly even underpaid...imagine that!! 😘

So what's going to motivate him to sign that if he thinks he can do better elsewhere? I would definitely offer it to find out as that would be nice but it doesn't sound like he is going to sign for something like that unfortunately.

With a week left, Burns is getting tagged.  I don't see an eleventh hour deal getting done. The question is which tag and do they shop him?  I think it would be dumb for the exclusive franchise tag to be applied and we lose out in the transitional tag.  So the non-exclusive tag should be used and shop the dude.  We might get lucky for some team to be desperate for an edge rusher.
