Another theory on Jake Delhomme's release/ Matt Moore starting

methodtoll

I know there has been several reasons as why Jake was released including:

1) To clear the way of any penalties come 2011

2) At 35, clearly the team wanted to go into a younger direction

But I wonder if part of the reasoning behind Jake's release was because maybe he just didn't fit into the scheme of the offense under Jeff Davidson or maybe Jake wasn't Davidson's ideal choice of being the starting QB.

When Davidson joined the Panthers, it was clear that Davidson wanted to bring in a offense similar to the one that was run in New England (at that time, New England didn't operate a spread offense, believe it or not) during their dynasty period. Jake, of course went down with the Tommy Gun/Tommy John injury and thus paved the way for Matt Moore to come in and shine.

Before continuing, I want to go back to Davidson's days in Cleveland where he, and the offensive staff watched as Derek Anderson came into the league. However, I do believe they were also paying attention to Moore as well.

Hince when they signed Matt Moore, why they were so impressed by him because I do believe that Davidson knew that Moore was more his guy then Jake was.

Now some may counter argue and state a few things:

1) If that was the case then why did it take three years to get rid of Jake Delhomme.

Answer: Because this is still John Fox's team and Fox is loyal to his vets. I do believe that Fox and Davidson didn't see eye-to-eye on everything.

2) This is a run-first offense, why does it matter who is under center?

Answer: Again, Davidson didn't want this to just be a run-first offense, he wants a balanced offense similar to what was run in New England.

Now I think that with Fox in his remaining year of his contract, I think he is realizing that it is time to let Davidson do his job and run the offense. We will just see how this pans out in time.

I think you're reading too much into this. Matt Moore just outplayed Delhomme last year, and that's pretty much it, aside from the added benefit of the Panthers being able to cut Delhomme without worrying about a cap hit.

Again, just a theory, speculation at this point but I was thinking about that last night.

I am not doubting that Moore outplayed Delhomme

That kind of makes sense. I mean, Davidson didn't call plays to help out Jake when he was struggling. The AZ playoff game, Jake's struggling and he keeps calling pass plays when we had scored off of running. The plays called really sucked for Jake.
