What if there's no lockout?

Here's what I understand about the NFL labor disagreement..

  • The owners want to reduce the salary cap by 18%. The players don't want to take a pay cut.
  • The owners want the players union to implement a rookie salary cap. The players want the owners to take the responsibility for rookie salaries and quit paying rookies so much.

That's really what it's all about, behind all the talk about new stadiums and growth of the sport and all. And the Owners will get paid in 2011 even if there aren't any games because of the way their TV contracts are structured.

Here's something to consider. First, read this article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wm-david-cornwell-sr/there-will-not-be-a-locko_b_463803.html

If the games are actually played in 2011 and, as the article suggests, the owners get their way as far as a new lower cap is concerned, then who are the big winners in Free Agency right now? The Panthers look be absorbing all of their salary cap mistakes in one uncapped year. That will position them very well in 2011 and beyond.

What are your thoughts on all this? With that in mind, who are the biggest losers in Free Agency?

Anyone who overpays right now for any player is going to be hurt big time. I am assuming though that there is not a collective bargaining agreement clause in their new contracts that lets them redo a contract should the cap situations change.

That's what I'm thinking. It occurred to me that the Bears have set themselves up for massive long-term failure in an attempt to win it all this year, that's what made me think of it.

Pep gets paid 20 million this season, So going into next season they'll owe him a 5 year deal worth up to 71 million if he gets over 12 sacks a year, gets DPOY each season and so on.....His contract is very incentive laden.

He still will be a major cap hog. If Lovie gets fired and they start to rebuild it will take them a lot longer with his massive contract. Thats prob why we didnt resign him right there.

If there's no lockout the Panthers will be scrambling to extend everyone they want to keep past 2010, everyone on a 1 year contract including the coaches and trainers. Or they will be hiring a new head coach with a multi-year contract. So far, they've set themselves up as if the world will be ending at the end of 2010. They may get the money from the tv contracts even with a lockout but that would be used to pay for the stadium/facilities and the few contracts that will exist in 2011, basics like that that they can't shed now.

    • No team in the league would sit back and say Mays outplayed Hunt or Lewis so its a typical case of stats (or ratings) not telling the story. The team also was in a much better position at the end of the year, where the begging was very rough all around. Everyone was learning the new scheme, calls, learning how new teammates played in real games and all of that changed the second half of the year. We started getting actual production from the run game and receivers and everyone’s play changed from the beginning of the year.   As a side note Mays goes down or another linemen who is coming in? We have zero depth and Brady Christiansen will be hitting free agency to be a starter elsewhere.  With as many holes as we have it makes sense as long as it’s team friendly deal. I’m not opposed to drafting someone as well, but we know what we are getting from Corbett when healthy and he’s above average playing multiple positions. Maybe they have it as an open competition between him and Mays, loser is the prime backup for G and C
