Panthers interested in Marques Douglas

33 is too old

Hollis Thomas is 35. You think we should keep him for next season then? ;)

But I don't know what to think of this to be honest. If we can't keep Brayton & Douglas sign for a one year contract, maybe we should take a look at him. Who know. Maybe he will flourish here. I really hope we can keep Brayton though. He wanted to stay here, so I hope he can accept a contract that isn't a lot but enough for him.

If the $ are right, sign him up.

Why?? This is a waste of money dude is 3 years past the decline line for DE's.

We could be useing this money on a good WR or better DE. This is a signing for when you don't have money not when you have money and can get better or younger player with more upside.

Does everyone realise Brayton is 30 and will be 31 before the end of the 2010 season? He's around 2 1/2 years younger than Douglas and with not much more pedigree.

Of course I would like us to retain Brayton, but if he wants a 3-4 year deal, whereas Douglas wants a one year vet minimum deal then its a no brainer.

Not necessarily. Contracts aren't guaranteed only the signing bonus. We could easily give Brayton a 5 year contract and be more than fine as long as we don't give him much of a signing bonus. Frankly I would bring in Douglas and keep Brayton. If Douglas doesn't stick, we cut him and if he signs for the vet minimum with no bonus, we are out nothing.

I know what the article said, but I don't see how we could play him on the edge, EVER. DEs in a 3-4 are DTs in a 4-3 almost always.

You're right about the strategy, but I was hoping we would make a bigger effort to bring in some depth on defense and a couple solid WRs.

You are right, Douglas would be DT in Meek's scheme. he is much too slow to come off the edge and has always played a DT for the Jets and Baltimore.

I 100% agree on the WR front. There were a couple of guys that were interesting....Boldin, Walter, Bryant.

I think we should have made a play on Bolding. I heard Walter really wanted to stay in Houston. Bryant is a little old and is wanting big money.

The draft is deep at WR...that is where I think we get our depth.

So far Boldin and Walter are gone. I doubt we pick up Bryant either. I don't know why we don't sign him. It would be worth it just to keep him from killing us twice a year with Tampa. I expect he wants to big a contract for us given we are going on the cheap.

exactly the point why some people are worried. we shouldnt just sign a player because he is cheap and is all that is available. this guy probably wasnt on anyones radar before this offseason. why dont we try the novel idea of actually getting a 4-3 de?

Well just because they haven't gotten one yet, that doesn't mean they won't. In the mean time, CJ and Brown are actually pretty good players, so we're not completely desperate.

When did they show they were pretty good??? The wooping 2.5 sacks by Brown or the total regression by CJ. CJ didn't meet expectation at all and EB kept getting stuffed trying too do the same spin move. Not to mention I think he needs another off season before he is big enough too stop the run. This FO will be doing these 2 guy a total diservice if they bring in a below average vet. Right now they have too not only step up their own games but try too cover some of the lost production from losing Pep. I think we are asking to much out of them.

CJ regressed? Ok, that says it all. There is officially no hope for you.

CJ had 4 sacks last season in a very limited role. Peppers only had 10.5 sacks as the starter. Which one do you think underachieved?

Well how many sacks did you expect from a rookie DE who didn't play every down? Most of them don't start getting sacks until year two even if they start right away. Brown and CJ can both get pressure consistently, which is really more important than sacks anyway. Also, I thought Brown was actually pretty good against the run in the latter part of the season.

    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
    • The lack of production is especially surprising given how much effort the team put into coaxing the best from him.  In just six short years he’s had the opportunity to work with 3 different GMs, 7 different head coaches and 10 different starting quarterbacks.  There’s literally no excuse to be made that one of those combos didn’t work.  It might be time to look withIAN.
