Pretty much, this season is a wash. It's all about cutting cost and contracts.

JR is one of the head owners leading the be smart about your money and don't spend it in the uncapped year, shed payroll and set your business up for success later if the league comes back in 2011.

Yeah, that's pretty much the case then. It all came clear to me when I started thinking about Richardson leading the CBA stuff and him looking at the big picture for the Panthers.

I don't think this season will be a wash. Our run game will be trill as always, it's the run-D that I'm worried about. We need a nice DT and DE for starts. I know Charles Johnson is getting better every year and Everette Brown needs to bulk up quite a bit before he can become a real threat.

Never said we wouldn't, but they really needed to get a legit second receiver and have failed at it unless they make a trade. I don't see them getting a legit number 2 for this season in the 2nd round of the draft. Jarret isn't that guy either imo.

The players they pick up in FA however will make less then Brayton was. They wanted him to take a paycut to stay with the team..Brayton wanted to be here, so I don't see him asking for that much money....

where have you read that we want brayton to take a paycut?

We tried to sign him today, but couldn't reach a deal with him. So it's about money, he wasn't making much to begin with and since he wanted to stay here, I doubt he was asking for a heck of a lot.

Brayton resurrected his career in Carolina in 2008 and the Panthers love his work ethic and high motor playing style. He also said last season that he would be "heartbroken" if the Panthers didn't bring him back. Brayton, 30, notched five sacks and 45 tackles in 15 games in 2009.

The Panthers will sign some vets, but they will be later on in FA on 1 and 2 year deals.

I think the Panthers d-line will get some pressure on opposing QBs because EB did show he could get to the QB (he just isn't big enough to bring them down) and I believe CJ is an upgrade over Brayton, but I worry about the run D.

This is probably Brayton's last contract. I am sure he is trying to maximize his payday.

Anyone who thinks players will give hometown deals and paycuts are usually sadly mistaken.

I am not pretending to know what Brayton was asking for. But, to think he was asking for less than what he thinks is his market value is silly.
