The 49ers Super Bowl problem

Let's pump the brakes, he won't have Andy Reid or Kelce for another 10 years.  Not to say that Mahomes can't win without them, but to be able to win multiple superbowls you need continuity in both coaching and talent around you like Brady had.

I think Mahomes is more of a Peyton type situation... he's mastered the offense and wherever he goes, or whoever his coach becomes, he's going to be the teacher, not the other way around.  Plus, I think Andy Reid's got another 6 years in him if he wants to keep coaching.

exactly, which is why the folks around Brock lost that game.  Not Brock.  He managed the game like he has all season long.  He did his job.

Did Purdy turn the ball over? No.  Did the 49ers? Yes. Multiple times.  And both were big turnovers given where they occured.

you in here bashing Purdy like he can be held to the standard of Mahomes.

How am I bashing Purdy?

He's not elite. That's a fact. Elite QBs with that roster wins championships.

Not sure how you blaming his team. The team around him is why he was in this position. Niners made the SB without Purdy.

Yeah that was crazy to me.  I think one of the commentators said the 49ers chose to receive in order to give their defense a rest because they were gassed on that last drive to end the half; I'm not sure if they were speculating or what.  So I guess I could at least understand the reasoning if that was the case, but man it still seems like you're giving up way too much of a potential advantage by deferring.  All that rest and they still gave up the TD anyways.

KC had the confidence.  Just get a FG and survive, TD wins it.  They knew what they needed to do and could use 4th down if needed.  I get resting the defense but man you are playing with some uncertainty vs knowing exactly what you need to do.

Really surprised no one has been calling out Wilks for playing 5 DBs off the ball on KC's final drive. After they converted the 4th and 1 MVS caught a 3 yard pass, broke a tackle going backwards and ended up losing 3 yards. Instead of playing up in the WRs faces like they were doing all game he had ALL of his DBs 5+ yards back off the ball allowing easy completions for Mahomes and Co. to go right down the field. It doesn't surprise me it fits Wilks's conservative nature and further reinforces why I'm glad we didn't choose him for a HC. I wouldn't be surprised to see him fired for that last drive and the overall struggles the 49ers defense had this season.

That loose coverage resulted in several plays where KC had guys running wide open downfield on crossing routes during critical moments of the game. Overall, I think the 49ers gave a solid effort, but they didn't come thru when the game was on the line.

he was picked dead last in the 7th round and this is his first season as the starting QB.  He is getting paid 2 peanuts and a cracker jack.  I don't care what the Skip Bayless type shows want to talk about.   No one here is having the elite convo.  I know I'm not.  If you want to make a long list of why they lost that game.....he isn't one of the top subjects/reasons.  And that's who you are spending your time talking about and fixated on.

Brock Purdy has and continues to overachieve.  He isn't why they lost the Super Bowl.  The folks around him turning it over, missing kicks, out coached after halftime, etc. are why they lost.

YES, the team around him is why they made the Super Bowl.  And they are the ones who lost it and didn't get it done.

Good post.

Shanahan didn't run the ball enough in the 2nd half.

The O-line had several critical penalties that were absolute drive killers for the 49ers.

The punt team muffed a kick that led to a TD one play later and a massive momentum shift.

CMC fumbled in the red zone on the first drive of the game.

The Kicker missed an extra point.

All of the above were the major reasons for the loss. I don't care how talented team is or who is behind center, you can't make those types of mistakes against a Mahomes/Reid team in the playoffs and expect to win a close game down the stretch.

Once in the 4th quarter, and Once in the OT Brock Purdy walked off the field with his team leading the game and both times the defense failed to hold up on their end.

But, a lot of people insist that Purdy should have won the game because of his stocked roster. If the stocked roster makes mistakes or fails to make impact plays how is that a reflection of Purdy?

Most of us agree that Purdy didn't play lights out last night, but he wasn't terrible. However, there is one thing he is going to have to do going forward. He's going to have to learn how to play off script when things breakdown or when the game plan isn't working. Shanahan, as someone pointed out, has had double digit lead in all 3 of his SB loses...with 3 different QB's. A lot of the blame has to fall on him. Purdy will probably end up having to carry his coach instead of the other way around if the 49ers are going to get over the hump and win a SB.

When I evaluate a QB I take the overall body of work into account alongside the supporting cast.  Rodgers threw exactly one touchdown pass in his entire career to a first round pick.  They also never drafted a single skill position player in the first round in his entire career.  I think, had Rodgers had capable players at the skill positions, he'd have 4 or 5 rings.  The Packers just never invested in anything to back him up.

Frankly, it's a foregone conclusion to me that (barring injury) Mahomes will probably win 10 superbowls, and 6 or 7 league MVPs when it's all said and done.  He so dramatically outclasses anyone to ever play the position that it's almost like he's a madden create-a-player.

Cam drug WR's 1000x times worse to a one loss regular season and SB appearance.

Rodgers if anything is the most overrated QB of his generation based on the playoffs.

CMC can't fumble in scoring position.  OL can't kill drives with penalties.  You can't muff a punt and give Mahomes the ball at the 16.   You can't miss XPs.

when you build your team like the 49ers have chosen...the burden is on the team.

KC and SF are build 2 very different ways.  The burden and expectations should be different.

Brock Purdy did his job given his role on that team.  He is paid a 2 buttons and some old pocket lint in comparison to other folks out there.

This will be a major issue very soon. Purdy is going to have a large price tag for basically an elite game manager.

This will basically be the end of the 49ers run, IMO.

The kick bouncing off SF player's heel changed the game. That doesn't happen and SF is celebrating a 6th title. Sometimes, that literally is just the way the ball bounces.

Purdy when throwing quick passes to CMC 7/7 59 yards.  Purdy when throwing to everyone else 16/31 196 and a TD.  He also missed 2 open TDs granted he was pressured quickly on the last one.  Running the offense through him 38 passes to CMC's 22 carries cost the 49ers.  CMC had a fumble, but he also accounted for 160 total yards and a TD he caught from his WR.  Purdy is fine and still very young, but Shanahan should have known better.

Purdy also wouldn't be starting if another elite game manager didn't repeatedly whiff on TD passes in the NFC Championship game.

That is where having one of those guys hurts, when you need elite plays at critical times.

The 49ers completely failed at sticking to the run.  The more involved CMC, the more efficient and productive the entire offense.  A handful of good stops by The chiefs defense, and the 49ers just completely put it on the back burner.

Congratulations to Kyle, he out started himself.

I rather doubt 30 carries moves the needle much. He ended the game with 22 carries for 80 yds.

Also, don't forget that Shanahan was the playcaller during the 28-3 meltdown. So that choker label extends well beyond the 49ers.

The offense couldn't stay on the field in the second half.

They were far to reliant on passing when there best player is in the backfield.

I've seen enough of Purdy to know he's not a system QB and has a bright future ahead of him.

The 49ers controlled the game the first half.

Despite losing a very good linebacker, and one of their starting guards,  they still had the lead in the 2nd half.

I don't care how many touchs a RB has... the 2nd half with the lead is the time to lean on that run game.

They completely abandoned the run, especially on early downs.  Their offense was unable to sustain drives.

Despite all the other miscues in the game, including CMC's rare fumble,  the 49ers would be champions right now if they had leaned on the8r run game in the second half.  That's without scoring anymore than they did.  Knowing how well a good run game opens things up...they probably would have scored another touchdown....but that's a what if.

Kyle outsmarted himself.  Not sure why he does it, but he has a history of doing it now. Don't blame Purdy for Kyle's decisions.
