How about Steve Wilkes?

To bad  S.F. couldn't play the same way in the 2nd half. I felt sure the way S.F. was pounding the Chiefs DL in the 1st half it would have a positive effect and wear them down for the 2nd half but it didn't seem to work out that way.

Wilks did really well until that cover zero prevent defense crap. As soon as that started, I knew Reid was going to tear him apart. The one thing you don't want to give Mahomes is an easy open middle of the field. Play the game that's been successful all night. Don't change just because it's the 4th quarter.

Old habits die hard.  Honestly, the Chiefs didn't take as much advantage of that cover prevent soft zone than they could have....of course they didn't have great wide receivers.

This didn’t age well.

Why’s that? He got fired here and went to the Super Bowl the next year. You could say people wanting to get rid of him didn’t age well.

This isn’t the flex you think it is.

I’m thinking you didn’t hear about him getting fired. 49ers saw the same thing I said both times he was DC here. Not a good DC. Definitely not a good HC.

Boom! Some guys just get the shaft and Wilks has over the last couple of seasons. The people that see it any other way are a bunch of fun dummies who base their argument off the fact he was beat by the winningest QB in NFL history with a secondary that needed a body so bad they signed a barista the week before they played. Never mind the competitive revival that happened to even make that game relevant.

I did. My comment stands. They don’t make it to the SB without his efforts. That defense played stellar for 3 quarters.

Wilks seems destined to be the defensive version of Eric Bienemy.  Something about their personalities just seem to clash with the players and/or coaches.

The guy coaches a Top-3 defense to the Super Bowl, shut down the juggernaut Mahomes much of the game, and gets fired?

Shanahan’s comments about it reference “not a great fit” and things of that nature (similar to reports about Bienemy).

When you’ve been the boss, sometimes it’s hard to have a boss. My take at least.

Probably the most realistic take. If we want to infer it’s a personality conflict I think that makes sense but we  should stop throwing his resume under the bus.

He’s an alpha. Can’t have multiple alphas on the coaching staff. Anything with two heads is a monster.

When it happens once, he got a bum deal. When it happens twice, maybe it’s a coincidence. Thrice? The problem is he’s just not very good. You can tout the defense rankings or whatever all you want, that is one of the most stacked defenses in history. He reverted to his passive soft tendencies and it contributed heavily to them losing. Same reason he was a poor HC and same reason both times he took over as DC here the defenses regressed. It’s like a quote I’ve been seeing online a lot lately, if you meet an asshole in the morning then you just met an asshole. If you meet assholes all day, you’re the asshole.

I agree that they played well.  Held the best qb in the league to 25 points in five qtrs, and one td was caused by a muffed punt.

I disagree that they don't make it without him.  They almost made it last year but got screwed at the qb position.
