How about Steve Wilkes?

Didn’t Shanahan call a timeout to “overrule” Wilks on one play? At least that’s what I thought I heard Nantz say. But yeah, that last drive in OT was vintage Wilks and why I didn’t want him as HC. Great guy, aggressive scheme, but he doesn’t show up when the game is on the line. Kind of like, Ron.

Yes, he did. Romo explained why.

YES.

He was running 5 deep and then full blitz underneath.  Mahomes had torched it multiple plays in a row and Wilks called it again.   Shannahan had enough and they changed to Some type of man w/2 deep safeties after timeoout.

The mistake is only blaming one and not both.

Wilks did what he frequently does; got conservative in the latter part of the game and allowed the other team back in.

Shanahan called a poor game putting it on the back of Purdy rather than McCaffrey.

Hell, even special teams had miscues.

Nobody comes out of this looking like a hero.

If you knew before the game that the Niners D held the Chiefs to 19 points over four quarters and forced two turnovers the Niners would've been overwhelming favorites to win the SB. the D played good enough to win. The offense didn't.

It was the equivalent to a team giving up a lead via multiple penalties and defensive collapse and then blaming the kicker for not nailing a 60 yarder to win the game by less than a score.

Wilks is a strong leader, but he's not a chessmaster. When he goes against chessmaster type offensive coaches he tends to lose. Evero is honestly better equipped to face that sort of coach than Wilks was.

(I'm not exactly sure Kyle Shanahan is a chessmaster either but that's a different discussion)

As a head coach, you have to hire guys that complement your weaknesses. Wilks was going to have Brian Johnson and Al Holcomb as his coordinators. Not great choices.

Folks saying that Wilks would have essentially been around Rivera level head coach are likely right.

It's not just the total number of points.

The timing of when they decided to allow those points makes a difference.

Wilks defense was way more salad in the first half than they were in the second and in overtime. And yeah, that's typical Wilks.

And getting cute with a lead in the SB and abandoning the run is typical Shanahan. That's where they lost the game.

i think with the right playcalling on offense, the 49ers would have won.

2 things happened, 1) 49ers deviated from what they were doing well and stopped running the ball. chiefs have one of the best secondary's in the league and then when you throw Chris Jones in the mix, that passing game is going to have some problems. which leads to 2) 49ers had a  little passing game that was working...until chris jones got it figured out and when he did they couldn't do anything about it.

best thing 49ers could have done was just keep running. of course if they had, CMC would likely have not been able to finish the game. i'm surprised he did. but the best thing they had in their arsenal was rushing the ball because the chiefs were just too good to pass consistently on all game.

muffing the punt (do we call that one a muff?) and getting that XP blocked were killers for sure, but shanny should have called a better game.

Shanahan is a regular season king but a Super Bowl serf.

Mind you, Andy Reid used to fade in the playoffs too, so maybe he'll learn.

An underrated mistake was taking the ball first on OT. With the new playoff OT rules you need to defer. It's like in college. Deferring let's you know what you're dealing with. If they score a TD you know you have to answer with a TD. If they kick a FG you know a TD wins it. If they fail to score you know any score wins it for you. Not only that, but a defensive score wins the game. If you put your offense on the field you can't win the game on that possession but you can lose it. You have to defer in that OT format.

Defense looked horrible the last 3 chiefs drives .  But with that said the cmc fumble and the muffed punt killed them.  Not so sure the missed extra point mattered bc chiefs would have just scored a td instead of a fg before ot with the way 9ers d was playing

The missed blocking assignment on the third and 4 was critical as well

I was thinking the same thing. I would never want the ball first in that OT format. I would always want the ball second to know what im up against and to be able to plan ahead from there what I will do. That decision left me scratching my head wondering why......

It wasn't a missed assignment as much as it was Jones not taking the bait. That CMC motion was about drawing the DL. They'd been doing it all night. They had a lot of success with it on their first drive where they were rolling until CMC fumbled. But the Chiefs adapted to it and stopped flowing with the OL. They realized it was misdirection.

    • NFL Pro has the All-22 up already 😄 Going to grab a play or two from each redzone series to put screenshots to. Looks like AT angled his route off to the near pylon rather than the back corner where Bryce was throwing to. I imagine this is something they'll quickly try to figure out with Thielen back from IR. After watching the All-22 again, this was actually a pretty nifty play. I thought it was a TE screen to Tremble because of the way XL charged the DB, but he quickly shed and kept upfield as seen in the second screenshot. This looks like it had multiple layers built into it with AT running the crosser, XL the fade, Tremble to the flat. The progression would call for the play to go to Chuba here as the LB does follow Tremble out into the flat. Ball hits Chuba low and in the hands, but the LB does a good job disrupting the catch.
    • The bottom lines to me are that a) we played well enough to beat the best team in the league and b) Bryce Young is growing into a bridge QB role (his ceiling) for us. As much as I don't want BY around after the season, it seems DC can still build the O with a game manager at QB for now. Best case scanario, we can build the D through the draft this year and take a QB we have conviction outside the 1st this or next draft. If BY keeps improving, we are going to win a couple more games this year.
    • Bryce has been a completely different QB since coming back. That started in Denver where it was obviously he was playing a lot more loose and willing to push the ball downfield  Bryce continues to build off of the previous weeks performance and that’s what you want to see Bryce has been making some real good anticipation throws. Reading defenses well. Pushing the ball downfield (7 throws of 20+ air yards yesterday. 8 if you want to include PI to Thielen). The deep ball accuracy has been there. Some of Young’s best throws yesterday were incompletions. Sideline balls to XL and Moore both should’ve been caught. RZ dot to Tremble should’ve been caught. And another RZ ball to Moore that Young gave him a chance at. Bryce is starting to execute Canales offense and yesterday Canales finally opened it up a bit. Canales was to blame for the 126 passing yards in Germany as he played a more conservative game.  The next bit I’m looking for his for Young to be a bit more decisive with running the ball. Start putting that on film and it’ll help open things up a tad
