NFL Combine Time Problems

Something is seriously wrong with the Combine's 40 times!

The Combine had a problem with the 40 times at last years Combine, but did nothing to fix the problem. The difference this year is that they now have a poster child for bad 40 times, Taylor Mays. Mays clearly ran around a 4.30 or 4.31 40, but it was first reported as a 4.24, the the "official" 40 time over compensated to a 4.43.

Why did this problem suddenly start with the opening of the Colts new stadium? Will the NFL now do something about it?

If the NFL doesn't fix this problem, next year 1/4 to 1/2 of the players may refuse to run the 40.

It just seems to me that since the 40 times seem to vary that coaches and scouts will focus on what is important which is how well they do the drills and look on film rather than straight line speed which tells very little.

Plus most guys have a pro-day lined up so they will have another chance to run the 40 if it so important to them.

I heard Gilyard today on NFL Sirius say he wasn't worried about the 40 times since they are such a little part of the whole process. He said that in the ned the interviews, and how you ran your routes and caught the bal were so much more important than a 40 yards dash without pads or equipment.

    • he averaged 2 yards in YAC per reception last year.  He can't generate quick separation.  He was debating retirement last year.    Yet we championing him as some great option.  AT is a savvy vet we force feed the ball too......on a team starved for basic offense the last couple seasons.  We overrated AT.  Which is why some freak when people like JT on his podcast point out the painfully obvious about him.
    • The Athletic has us ranked 28th on their post-draft power rankings, mainly due to us picking T-Mc instead of defense in round 1. They recognize we needed WR help, but... https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6317651/2025/04/29/nfl-power-rankings-post-draft-rookies-eagles-chiefs-bills/
    • I mean, he is a slot technician.  That's what he does.  So, in a good offense, you would be trotting him out there on 3rd downs and situationally.....to not take what they give him but to move chains.  It's a niche.  AT hasn't threatened defenses in years.  Last time we saw Renfrow on the field he averaged..... 6 yards YAC per catch.  Adam Thielen last year averaged....2 yards in YAC per catch last year.  I still contend in reality, AT isn't a slot WR.  Not in reality.  He is an aging rec TE.  And those aren't the same thing.  AT simply can't generate quick separation or provide YAC.
