And I actually think it was a quote by Voltaire's biographer iirc used to describe how Voltaire thought.

It is often attributed to Voltaire. However, this cannot be confirmed.

There is also a belief that it may have been penned for the first time by Evelyn Beatrice Hall from a book she wrote entitiled "Friends of Voltaire". She penned it under the Stephen T Tallentyre.
