Umm...the captain would like to say something about that. I personally don't think Munnerlyn played badly at all last year and don't forget we still have Sherrod Martin we could insert at FS and have Godfrey play corner or vice versa.

I do think Munnerlyn has potential, but I don't want him to be thrown into a starting role next year and have our secondary suffer because he's still learning. People give Marshall crap because he's not some super star corner, but fact is he is a lot better than most other teams #2 CB's. Panthers secondary was dominating at the end of last year, and I'd like to keep them together to continue it.

There is, of course, the possibility that Ron Meeks isn't that high on him.

One of the first things I remember hearing at last year's minicamp was Meeks calling out Marshall as the squads were running from one practice field to another for the next drill. Meeks yelled out "Where's Richard Marshall? Where's Richard Marshall? Is he running?"

Could have just been motivation, for sure. But given that they didn't choose to give Marshall a first round tender, I have to wonder at least a little.

And yes, this could apply to Julius Peppers as well, since the only difference between last year's decision making and this year's is that Meeks has had a year to see how Peppers plays.

Marshall was our best corner statistically last year.

But, he was also mouthily demanding a contract before he broke the starting lineup, too. A deal supposedly bigger than the one Gamble eventually got.

So, a couple things there. A 2nd keeps him from setting his value as if he's a Thomas Davis - sure, you started, but you don't need $10 mil a year.

Two, at a 2nd, he's actually a commodity, not just someone we're holding away from other teams. Teams will try to negotiate with him - he'll have a real idea of what his value is. If it's more than our value, he can go. For a 2nd. If not, we'll use someone else to negotiate our deal and then we have him in for a few years.

I wouldn't mind getting a 2nd for him. If the team has chosen to pay Gamble, with no intention of holding another highly paid corner, I'm OK with netting a 2nd for the difference between starting him and watching Wilson/Martin beating Munnerlyn for the start.

I think it was a great move for the Panthers myself (as long as we plan on keeping him). He thinks he is worth a ton of money, so let's get an idea of how much. It wasn't too smart a move to pay Gamble as much as we did and can't afford to give Marshall the same, so hopefully no other teams get interested and we can throw a reasonable contract at him. I would much rather keep him than lose him though, so I hope we don't plan on actually letting him walk for anything less than a big contract from another team.

What people need to remember, is that he wants to hit free agency, regardless of what we offer him. He has been quoted on more than one occasion that he wants a monster contract, so it is likely that he will NOT be a Panther in 2011.

This opportunity for him to talk to some teams might also make him realise a huge contract is not on the horizon, whereas if we tendered him high then he would accept nothing less than elite corner money. It was realistically the only tender we could give him to cover both bases.

So now is the perfect time to try and get some compensation and look for a replacement.
