Thursday RFA Tenders

They must think very highly of Jeff King to 2nd round tender him. I think I would have placed a 3rd on him and see if anyone would bite.

There is no 3rd. There's a 1 and 3, a 1, a 2 or an original.

The only lower tender (original) would have netted a 5th.

Simple observations:

1. No tender to Teal leaves only 2.5 safeties on the roster (Martin is the 0.5). Teal could be re-signed at the aboslute minimum when the smoke from FA clears, but still... FA/draft here we come.

2. Look at the Leonard and Tyler tenders, 3rd round pick Tyler gets the minimum because we can get 3rd round compensation. Undrafted Leonard gets the 2nd round tender because it's the minimum tender to receiver any compensation. At first glance, it appears the team likes Leonard more, but I think if the situation were reversed (Leonard drafted, Tyler not) Tyler would have gotten the 2nd round tender and Leonard would have gotten the minimum. This is a big hole in the RFA system that will probably be swept under the rug during the CBA bargaining. Currently Leonard is offered 52% more salary basically because he was undrafted, Tyler is offered less because he was (drafted). This is an every year problem with RFA, not just because of the uncapped year. Doesn't mean much to a fan playing GM and figuring the cap, but I guarantee it does to the players involved.

3. Why did we offer Hayden anything? Fuggin' no talent teacher's pet.

4. If this weren't an uncapped year - Andersen, Marshall and King would be given 3-4 year cap friendly offers. Marshall would definitely test FA, Andersen 50/50 and King would resign immediately. I think the end result would be retaining Andersen and King, with Marshall finding a deal he perceives to be slightly better with another team. Don't forget we have a glut of corners on the roster with "big" corner Martin waiting in the wings. They refused to keep Martin at FS last year even though he was obviously better than Godfrey, so I think he's how the team views the future of the CB position. I would rather have Martin at FS and find another "big" corner to develop, but that's just me. IMO Marshall and Munnerlyn are essentially the same player going forward. I don't necessarily agree with the above strategy, but that's what I think Hurney would have done. In Hurney's defense, it would be easier to find a quality safety in the draft/FA than a "big" corner. I'm just tired of Godfrey staring at puppy dogs and rainbows out there after the ball is snapped. Oh, and BTW in a capped year we would have locked up Davis long term, injury or no.
