Matt Moore and the Tender

Delhommey

Recommended Posts

I had long held that the second round tender would be the right move for Moore, but I'm probably the only one who's thought that. Highly unlikely anyone else would agree at this point in the game.

I do. Three things can happen with the second round tender:

No one signs him and we save a cool million dollars in payroll as compared to the 1st round tender. (Most likely)

Some one signs him to an offer sheet that reflects the economic realities of RFA in this offseason, mainly that the signing team must also have to give up a pick, there is a lock out scheduled for next season, and Moore is still an unproven commoditiy.

In this case, the team either offers the bargain value contract and the Panthers match to get Moore signed for a few seasons to a lower contract, or the team overpays and the Panthers let Moore walk for a 2nd round pick.

Teams like Seattle and San Fran can, but neither team is desperate for an immediate starter.

If we trade Moore, we then become desperate for an immediate starter. Does this mean you would advocate throwing Delhomme in again for another season?

I say have an open competition, but yes, it may mean another year of Delhomme.

Keeping in mind how unlikely that situation would be...

Also, Derek Anderson is a great name to bring up as an example that a few good games do not mean you've found your QB of the future.

If it means another season of Jake, then we need at least five draft picks for Matt.

How high we tender Moore will give you some indication of how high we value Moore. Asecond round tender would mean he is surely disposable. A first and a third would indicate we intend to keep him or at least get a high price for him. Of course part of the process is making sure we get enough for him based on the going rate but it also indicates how much he figures into our future plans. I suspect that the FO is not as desperate to keep him as many fans are, or we would have already locked him up long term. THey also probably know that putting all their eggs in one basket is unwise because like in 2008, Moore was hurt before the season even began. In fact it has been since 2005 that our opening day quarterback finished all 16 games in a regular season.

That question will be answered sometime in the next 48 hours.

We already have a water boy...

I believe what he's hinting at is the possibility that Moore could be another Derek Anderson (i.e. look good for a stretch, then tank).

Interesting to note that we currently employ the coach who made Derek Anderson look good. You could take that as a sign that Moore will tank, or you could spin it to say that since we have Scherer still around, he'll only get better.

What team doesn't want a 25 year old QB w/ potential that they can mold? especially for a second round pick. Put more on him than hes worth. First rounder at least. Bigger question here, would we match another team's offer?

Barring poison pills, I think we would.

I think there will be a little bit of a game of chicken here and they'll just put the first round tender on Moore. And I agree with it.

The only teams outside the top 10 picks this year that need a QB are Seattle (14), San Fran (17) and maybe Minny (30).

If we got a top ten pick in this draft, it's for sure worth it. I'll argue that with anyone.

Seattle will wait til next year and make a move on Jake Locker when he comes out, San Fran is going to give Alex Smith a shot to prove himself and it is doubtful Minny will actually look for a QB. The only 2 teams really looking for a QB this year are St. Louis and Washington and they will get Clausen and Bradford.

If the Rams are stupid and don't take one of the two with the first pick, their could be a collosal plummet for one of the two or Seattle could take them at 6. I just don't see the Seahawks taking a QB since the hometown guy would be a big boost for them next year.

Eggs in one basket...

Kinda like 5 years with Delhomme after a record breaking playoff game meltdown? Moore isn't locked up because Fox doesn't like him and his relaxed style. Fox doesn't know poo about creating a solid a QB so 'intangibles' are 100% required to be a Fox QB. Its simple, the only reason he was around up until now is because he has value. That's it. I very strongly suspect they will trade him if they get offers for a 1st and 3rd rather than keep him. The big mystery to me if they sign Moore long term is are they thinking about Fox only having one year on his contract and Moore (at least to me) is much more likely to be more appealing to a fresh (or any) other coach instead of Delhomme. The panthers are not going to draft a QB at least this year that to me is a given they would wait it out. Trading Moore most definitely means Delhomme or FA. It will be hard, especially for Fox, to go to FA with one year left.

It will be very interesting to see who starts come game time and what happens in camp...
