Tampering?

What does the agent have to lose in all of this?

I think it's a bone-headed move by Chicago's front office.

Yup, was bone-headed by the Bears FO... Peppers and his agent have nothing to lose on this.

consider this....carey may have been the one to leak this. he's the only amateur in this situation. could be he thought this was a good way to drive up the price in letting everyone know that the bears are interested.

now he'll have to deal with teams not wanting to talk to him because he has a big mouth. pure speculation, mind you. however, i do think this is very likely. at the very least carey may have just lost a chance for peppers to go to the bears. there isn't a whole lot of teams that are going to be looking to pay pep. could have shot themselves in the foot by doing this.

I think if we wanted a third-round pick in exchange for Peppers, we could have had it by tagging him.

But that's another story entirely.

because we for sure could have found someone willing to pay $21mil for one year of service in a year that most of the owners are unified in trying to be frugal.

sorry....never was worth the risk.

Assuming this is true and Chicago ends up signing him, we actually could get a decent award when all is said and done.

But really Fox probably won't pursue anything because he has a gentleman's agreement with Lovie Smith (they had sex back in the 80s or something I guess.)

Hey, I'm with you -- I'm one of the few on here who was happy to see us cut our ties with Peppers. He doesn't want to be here, and as you said, it would have been a risk in hoping that someone would pay him a ridiculous amount of money, while also assuming the risk of him leaving.

The Panthers are just trying to wash their hands of all things Peppers -- and it's for this very reason I doubt we see them pursue these tampering charges.

I think the difference is the Bears did not release Briggs when the 49ers con tacted that party, the Panthers have already released Peppers. It doesn't make sense that the Bears have "been there" with this whole tampering situation before and then go and commit it themselves,(although this is Lovie "I'm confused" Smith and co. we're talking about). I think there are a few other elements in this story and with the "tampering" rules that are not being mentioned. I'm curious to know as well. Maybe you guys will get our 3rd rounder or one one of our three 2nd rounders when we trade Olsen to the Pats..........Not!

Indications are Peppers interested in Bears

But free agent defensive end’s asking price might be too steep

By Vaughn McClure, Tribune reporter 8:00 p.m. CST, March 2, 2010

As the Bears move closer to free agency, the player believed to be their top target apparently has a strong mutual interest he expressed as early as last year.

When defensive end Julius Peppers wanted out of Carolina after the 2008 season, the fourth ``mystery'' team on his wish list was the Bears, a league source familiar with the five-time Pro Bowl selection's trade demands told the Tribune. The others teams were identified as the Cowboys, Eagles and Patriots.

Three of those teams — the Bears, Patriots and Eagles — are expected to make a serious run at Peppers when the unrestricted free agent hits the market at 11:01 p.m. Thursday. The free-spending Redskins also figure to make a play, which could take the price tag out of the Bears' range. Peppers could command up to $15 million per year.

Peppers desire to play in Chicago still exists a year later, according to the source. He developed a great respect for Bears coach Lovie Smith and the tradition of the organization simply based on conversations with ex-Bears Muhsin Muhammad and Dante Wesley, Panthers teammates last season.

Although there has been talk of Peppers wanting to join a contender, he appears willing to join a franchise at least making the effort to improve. The Bears added offensive coordinator Mike Martz with hopes of seeing Jay Cutler and the offense thrive. Plus Peppers would have the chance to work with defensive line guru Rod Marinelli, now the defensive coordinator.

The Bears need to improve their pass rush immensely after managing just 35 sacks last season, 24 coming from the defensive line. The 30-year-old Peppers has 81 career sacks in eight seasons, good enough numbers to make the NFL's All-Decade team.

Not true. There was apparently a blurb on ESPN that said that, but it's incorrect.

Until midnight Friday, he is still Panthers property.
