I've never heard anyone use it the way you said. For what you're talking about someone would say "late 30s" or "pushing 40" or something along those lines. "Wrong side of an age" just means over that age.

Neither have I. You are absolutely correct. Think of 30 as a wall. Younger is on the good/right side and older is on the bad/wrong side.

I think he’s confusing stuff like when you tell people who turn 35 that you are closer to 40 or on the downslope/downhill to 40.
