Lout's Mock

Lout

Recommended Posts

The Panthers have been seen talking to 2 LB's at length at the combine.. while this does not mean much about the individual players, it does say a lot about the panthers intentions come draft time regarding the LB position.

The two LBs seen talking with Panthers exec's were Dakota Watson (FSU) and Perry Riley (LSU), whom are projected to go in the 3rd and 4th rounds respectively. Both are scouted as being very fast and unable to play man-to-man effectively, thus projecting them to be cover-2 LBs.

2nd Round Pick - WR - Damian Williams USC

It's almost a forgone conclusion at this point, that the Panthers address the WR position with this pick. Unless they pickup a notable WR in FA as a stop-gap of course.

Call me crazy, but I think the Panthers will try yet again on a USC WR.. this is borderline insanity by the Panthers FO..

3rd Round Pick - OLB - Dakota Watson FSU

The Panthers are looking for depth, whether it be for a replacement for Diggs, or insurance for Davis.. the Panthers are looking to spend either their 3rd-4th round pick on a LB, and that's a fact.

4th Round Pick - DE - George Selvie South Florida

This guy was projected as a 1st round pick before the 09' season.. he had a very inconsistent senior season, but could be a low risk/high reward pick here.

6th Round Pick - DE - EJ Wilson North Carolina

Frankly, we need the depth at DE with the loss of Peppers.. and we will bring in much competition to get an effective rotation. BPA.

7th Round Pick - QB - John Skelton Fordham/Sean Canfield

The Panthers will definately look to take a QB in this draft.. the question is where? I believe they will take a late round flier here, and not waste a higher pick on a position that takes time to develop. Both QBs have a lot of upside and would be a good value here.

we scout a few a hundred players and probably "talk" to just as many. It doesn't neccessarily mean they are looking at a certain position specifically since they scout so many players. A few of the players we drafted we never even talked to them.

Watson's skills as a pass rusher could very well mean we take him though as we'll be looking for ways to supplant peppers. And it makes plenty of sense that we would take a USC WR although I'm really tired of it. Pretty good mock. I'll probably add Dakota Watson in a few of mine.

Great mock, makes a bunch of sense. I'd bet quite a bit we draft a LB as Davis is coming off injury and Diggs is getting older (he's underrated as hell and a good player still, however).

I hope to God you're wrong about us dipping from the USC well again, though. That'd be tough to hear.

I only listed Watson and Riley because the Panthers seemed to be "around" them more so than other players. All it means to me, is that we are looking at mid-round LBs.. and plan to take one around that part of the draft. Like I said before, not so much as Watson and Riley as individuals, but just the position in general. I don't read too much into who we "talk" to, but I do take note of the position we are talking to and the projected round.

I personally would prefer Arrelious Benn with our first pick.. he did not have a good junior year and didn't run terribly fast in his 40.. so there is a chance he could be there for us in the 2nd, but I doubt it. Williams is definately got the athletic ability to succeed at the next level (as do all USC players), and he is excellent at route running which is the downfall of most USC WR's.. they just rely on athletic ability to get open. Williams biggest negative is his release.. he can not break free on press coverage.. but he excels when the WR is backed off him 10 yards.

Forgot about that, thanks, edited.

No worries.. We might actually get compensatory selections in the 5th, 6th, and 7th... So you could have left it :)

I'll probably be posting my mock in a little bit... It has a trade though, and still allows for compensatory picks...

The panthers were also talking to Daryl washington but his stock is on the rise.

Another great cover 2 LB prospect, I didn't hear about him, but I am gald to hear they talked to him. He reminds me of a poor man's Thomas Davis. He is kind of a tweener.. a LB in a safety's body. He will need to put about 10lbs of muscle on but he would be a very good LB in our system.

His stock is at a high 3rd round pick and is slipping into the 2nd round, so we might have to take him in the 2nd round which would be a reach at this point..
