Morgan / Canales leash…. 3 seasons?

Minimum three. To me this is Teppers mindset: Three years gets Rhule and Frank off the payroll, as well as the end of Young’s rookie wage scale (not counting the 5th year option.) This will show enough patience to give them more than enough time to build a contending team, and we will know of Young is a proven starter in the league and can move on (of course us fans will make this call by the end of this upcoming season, but I bet in Teppers eyes it’s the end of year 4 based on what we gave up). By the end of year 3 it’s either extension time or cleaning house time for Young and the coach/GM

I think Canales will get at least 2 full seasons without major scrutiny or risk of being fired. Bt the start of the 3rd season there will need to be more answers than questions. He's a young first time coach and you can't fire someone who we absolutely know is going to need time for a learning curve after 11 games.

The team is total buttcheeks right now, especially the offense. It's going to be a lot of work and the team could very easily be the worst team in the NFL again, especially not having the first overall pick to change the fortunes after the worst season in the NFL. The goal for 2024 is to see if Bryce Young is the QB of the future. Canales will need to do everything he can to put Bryce in situations to make plays. If it's clear Bryce is not the guy, Canales should have a shot at selecting a QB with the Panthers 2025 first round pick. By then I'd hope the team is a little more sound in other areas, but the lack of draft capital the next few seasons is going to leave it's mark over the next few seasons.

It's quite possible this turns out to be a disaster no matter what Canales does because he was saddled with a bad QB and no first round draft pick in his first season. That's just not a good start. Last season was the time to take a shot on a young coach like this, so they're already a year behind I'd say. It's not a good starting situation.

Side note, I think Tepper fired Reich so quickly because he was an old veteran coach and Tepper expected results from someone like that right away. That was a fallacy because the team was much worse than expected and not all of it was Frank Reich's fault. The positive trend at the end of 2022 also gave ownership and the fans false hope the team was improving which is also why results were expected so quickly. Reich was also fired from his job with the Colts because the team had completely fallen apart. So expecting him to morph into some great coach was unrealistic from the start. He was also handed a flawed and physically limited QB who did not fit his system, whether it was his choice to draft him or not.

tl;dr - I give Canales at least two full seasons before there's a chance he gets fired. I honestly have my doubts for his success because of the poor situation he begins his coaching tenure with.

I want everyone to hear this loud and clear. We are *NOT* going to be good next year. There are just too many holes on this roster and not enough draft capital/cap space will be available to fix everything.

So if we win 5-6 games, I will actually consider that a huge improvement. Please, I am begging you guys to give Canales at least until year three to see what's he got. That actually coincides with our Bryce timeline very well because if we aren't good by year three it will be time to start anew ....again.

Tell that to David Tepper. He basically has acted much like what an average NFL fan thinks is right with disastrous consequences.

I mean 3 years seems reasonable to show some sort of decent improvement. I’d expect a team being in the playoff race (not necessarily even making it) by year 3 reasonable. We all knew Rhule wasn’t the right year halfway through year 3.

I'm not sure if there's anyone in here that has a generally positive opinion on Tepper at this point. That's a mighty feat.

No talk about winning the NFC South. No talk about playoffs. Sit in a suite, say nothing and let the people you hired do their jobs without any worry you'll fire them in the near future.

I hope Dan laid out just how depleted this roster is and how long it will take to fix.

It’s very likely BY looks better next year. That will buy everyone another year at the very least.

This group is here as long as BY is here.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
