Philip Rivers Vs the MVP

The Colts lost in the playoffs because of the usual reasons...offense underperforms to their regular season standards while defense either overachieves or is about the same as their regular season standards.

He usually either has a horrible game in the playoffs (he's had 3 1/2 great playoff games in his career) or one like Saturday night which isn't horrible or even bad on it's face but as Vic pointed out contains few plays in the clutch when his team needs him even though he is surrounded by all star skill players. The fact they have had a shittastic run game hurts them no doubt, but this happens a lot more than just Saturday night. Plus he is the one who has total control of changing the play/running the offense which he gets credit for when it works (the play he fooled the SD defense on) but never gets criticized for when it doesn't (For example, who called the protection on that blindside sack?). If you are a truly GREAT player IMO, you either raise your game up in the postseason or maintain your great regular season play. He does neither. And in my book, it is totally fair to expect him to do it most of the time for what he is paid and what talent he has around him. He's not to blame for the loss, but he came up small.

To be fair, Rivers didn't play like much of an MVP. No TD's, 1 pick, 217 yds passing. The Chargers didn't score much and when they did it was because of Sproles. The Chargers had way more rushing yards and return yards than the Colts. Peyton had to score with no run game starting inside his own 10. He still matched Rivers for 60 minutes.

This is very true, however you have to remember that the Indy D played out of it's mind.

Rivers made the plays when the game was on the line. Period.

4th quarter drives to tie, overtime to win...etc.

The balls bounced Indys way the entire game (fumble on the 2, 4 dropped ints from the SD defense, etc...) and he could not get a first down to seal the win at the end of regulation.

I will say this though, Manning 1 is the best regular season QB I have ever seen, but really, really sucks in the playoffs.
