Where does Peppers wind up?

I would say Philly, Dallas, or Washington. They will all be spending crazy money this off-season. You prob could throw ether NY ball club in there as well.

oh what i would do to have an owner who actually wants to win instead of sacraficing his teams success for the better of the nfl. everyone say what they want about how great Jerry Richardson is, but he is absolutly wrong in how he is handling this offseason.

go on please explain to me how I am wrong....

"Gantt also talked about Jerry Richardson's mindset during this period and said that Richardson strikes him as the kind of guy who's willing to sacrifice the short term success of the Panthers for the long time goals of the NFL. Take that as you may, but it indicates to me that we wont see a lot of action in free agency."

Example A: Letting Julius Peppers go in an uncapped year.

Here.

Example: Or take the risk, franchise him, he doesn't sign until last minute, you're screwed, etc.

You don't have to regurgitate everything everyone else says.

Ok you franchise him and do not sign him, and your in the same position as last year, the only difference is there is no salary cap so his contract is not handcuffing the team. Do not give the BS that last year the only reason we franchised him was because they wanted to work out a long term deal, when he was very open stating that he wanted to leave. Jerry Richardson has the money to franchise his best defensive player and still go after other players to help build the team. He is just choosing to be cheap and worrying about the lock out rather then being worried about winning, which makes me angry.

How can you expect your players to go out and play to win when your own owner is pretty much saying this is going to be a wash year. Look at baseball..teams lke the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers. They spend money and they are consistently in the playoffs, they are not worried about the state of the game and are more worried about the state of their team and winning championships, that is what JR shuld be worried about.

You do realise that teams actually have a budget regardless of the cap, yeah? As in they are a business and they need to make sure they do not go bankrupt?

Time near for Bears and Peppers

Club can’t speak publically, but it’s believed it has much interest in biggest catch of free agency

By Vaughn McClure, Tribune reporter 8:53 p.m. CST, February 25, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS — As Bears coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo prepare to face the media Friday at the NFL scouting combine, one can bet neither will slip and mention Julius Peppers' name.

Teams are prohibited from having such public discussion until the free agency period begins next Friday. But there is a buzz circulating throughout Indianapolis about the Bears' apparent interest in the unrestricted free-agent defensive end, the biggest catch on the market.

When Smith and Angelo are asked how they plan to upgrade the defense, defensive end is sure to be the primary topic. A dominant pass-rusher could be the remedy to cure the Cover-2 blues.

There is no question about Peppers' ability. The 30-year-old, five-time Pro Bowl selection has 81 career sacks in eight seasons with the Panthers. But would the Bears be willing to get into a bidding war for a player possibly commanding $15 million season?

Team President Ted Phillips said the Bears wouldn't go "hog wild'' in free agency, but they probably need to pig out.

Just ask Brian Urlacher.

"Obviously, just look at what he has done,'' the linebacker said. ``The big-play ability he has and he plays hard. … Any team he goes to he's going to help right away.''

And if the Bears are not willing to spend the money, then what would be the backup plan? Aaron Kampman? Leonard Little? A trade? Ogunleye? The picture should become much clearer in the next week or two.

The Panthers are not hurting and are on the better half of the list when it comes to team revenue. Spending 3 million dollars more then last year is not going to bankrupt your team. And here is a better idea, instead of wasting a whole month with their fingers up their asses and ignoring him, they could have worked out a long term contract with him that would have paid him less then 21 mil. He stated that he would like to come back with the Panthers and was willing to sign a long term deal because he was happy with the Ron Meeks defense. They did not even make an attempt, instead they ignored him the whole time and kept Julius and his agent out of the loop on what their plans were. Maybe Jerry Richardson could have went to his role model Dan Rooney for advice, who were able to re-sign Casey Hampton rather then slapping a tage on him. They did not even make an attemtp to work out a deal this year. You have to spend money to win money. The Patriots and Steelers have come out and said they will not go over the cap they want to help get the NFL back to where it was. Well they can say that because combined they have won 5 Super Bowls in the past ten years. That is 5 more then Jerry Richardson and his Carolina Panthers.

What you are asking, is to franchise Pep and then extend our other players and then be active in free agency. That is a very stupid business plan and it happens with the English soccer teams all the time.

They use their current financial standings to overextend one season to bring in quality players, then if they do not hit their targets for the season they do not get the extra revenue they were expecting and are instead lumped with huge debt.

The teams that have the huge fanbase and astronomical income are the teams that can afford to make the moves you want them to, as they have the long term resources. A team like ours that is run by the book and has small market simply HAS to consider any future implication. The reason we are considered a 'well off' organisation is because we are very calculated and have an owner who knows how to run his team.

In Pep's situation it is indeed only another $3 million. However history has shown that he will not sign the tender until he has too to get his money. So we WILL be on the hook for all of it. This is significant when we are rumoured to have been offering him around $13million a year as that would have been built into our budget. So all of a sudden that $21 million is $8 million over our long term budget and then add on any free agents you expect them to sign and we could be looking at $15-20 million for this season alone, tag on any extensions and the figure will rise to $25-30 million. Do we make that amount in post-tax profits in a 12 month span? Regardless, the reason we have not franchised Pep, is because the risk far outweighs the reward and signing him will lock us out of extending more relevant players as it will obviously upset our budget plans.

I remember hearing the old Ravens coach talking about the Bart Scott, Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs situation. He basically said if they went for one they knew they couldn't re-sign the other as they wouldn't be able to afford it, just to clarify he said AFFORD, not fit under cap. Franchising Pep would have the same ramifications but on a larger scale.

I said nothing about bringing back Peppers, signing all of our guys, and being active in free agency. I said we should have brought him back and filled our team accordingly. I believe we had a very strong team with Peppers,so we would not have had to been that active in free agency. Now without Peppers teams do not need to game plan around our defense as much. Clearly most of the game planning went towards Peppers which helped players like Brayton, Brown, and Johnson get one on one blockage. Peppers also was the number one player to generating a pass rush which made our secondary better. It allowed our linebackers not have to blitz as much and roam to field. There is no replacing Peppers no matter what anyone says, he is a once in a generation talent. And do not tell me that if we signed him to an exstention then we would lose three or four of our younger players. IT IS AN UNCAPPED YEAR RIGHT NOW. Also what is the difference if we signed him last year would we not have still lost those same players or would they have magically been kept? So I guess Marty Hurney was willing to lose those same players this year but one offseason later he has a revelation and realizes he cant let them go? No that is not the case at all Jerry Richardson is being cheap and driving this franchise into the ground. Like I said it is fine for Rooney and Kraft to play by the rules because they have won championships and proved they know what tehre doing, I am still waiting for Richardson to do the same.

    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
