They were both running for the ball. One guy just couldn't catch and the other guy could. The ball is fair game in the air. The receiver has no right to "his spot" when they're both playing the ball. The ball was overthrown and the receiver had no chance outside of an INT bouncing off the DB's face.

It was interference. Of course you can get an INT if you keep the receiver from getting to his spot by holding. He made the play, so they picked the flag up.
