NFL Competition Committee to consider "Modified Sudden Death Rule" for OT

Exactly what I've wanted the NFL to go to. In OT, if the first team scores the second team should be given 1 possession to match or exceed the points on the board. If neither team scores on their 1st possession, it goes to sudden death.

Nah, keep overtime the same. Not interesting in changing it. Like the way it is.

If I hate an overtime, it's college. No thanks.

So your in favor of each team not having an equal chance to win the football game in overtime. Thats interesting I guess.

People seem to forget that Defense is part of the game. If your defense can't stop the offense from scoring, then they deserve to lose. The losing team had 60 minutes to win the game.

Look at it this way with the way our special teams played this year lets say returner x (plug in any elite kick returner in the NFL) gets the ball out to around the 40 to start overtime. Offense gets 25 yards and their in FG range. Sorry I would much rather have both teams get the chance to score if the first team doesn't score a TD. If the D gives up a TD on the first drive in overtime I have no problem with the game being over. When we lose on a long FG though it really leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Looks like they are going to propose this... so I guess it's up to the owners to decide...

Competition Committee will propose "modified sudden death" for overtime

As expected, the NFL's Competition Committee will propose at next week's league meetings (which will be held not in Maui but at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando) a change to the overtime rules.

The new rule, as previously reported by many, will allow the team that receives the kickoff to start overtime to win the game only by scoring a touchdown. At that point, the game would end without the other team getting the ball -- and without an extra point being attempted.

If the team that receives the kickoff scores a field goal, the other team would then get the ball. A field goal by the other team would then extend the game, making it truly sudden death. Failure to score at all would end the game, as would a touchdown by the team that kicked off to start overtime.

...

It remains unclear whether the owners will approve the measure. McKay said he has no feel for whether 24 or more votes will be cast in favor of it. But he said that the Competition Committee believed it was the right time to propose the change -- possibly due to the outcome of the NFC title game, which the Saints won on a first-drive field goal.

But the team on defense first has to stop the other team and then have their offense score.

The team that wins the toss only has to have their offense score.

Not parity

ending the game in OT on a FG sucks period. You don't even have to move all the way down the field. my opinion is different if they score a TD. thats where I might agree with the Defense argument. During the game holding the offense to a field goal is a win. In OT all you need is what 30-40 yards, sometimes less depending on the kickoff. thats dumb.
