Seymour gets tagged

The Oakland Raiders have applied the franchise tag to defensive lineman Richard Seymour.

Ron Borges of the Boston Herald is reporting that the Raiders slapped Seymour with the tag -- which comes with an offer of a one-year guaranteed contract worth $12.398 million -- while the team and Seymour continue negotiations on a long-term deal.

Seymour said he would be "happy to stay with the Raiders and be a part of bringing them back to the playoffs."

The Raiders acquired Seymour in a trade with the Patriots just before the start of the 2009 season. Not wanting to lose a player who cost them their 2011 first-round draft pick after just one season, the Raiders were widely expected to put the franchise tag on him if they couldn't sign him to a long-term deal.

That's the only way the Radiers can keep anyone that resembles having talent.

yup, overpaying is their specialty

We had to pay Peppers last year what turned out to be 18 million dollars to keep him. At least Da Raiders have Seymour at a "reasonable" 12 million. Plus this: Seymour said he would be "happy to stay with the Raiders and be a part of bringing them back to the playoffs."

Davis>Hurney in this case.

they have him at a reasonable price but he has only been with the team for less than a year and they had to tag him. I for one dont think he is anywhere close to julius peppers abilities. Richard Seymour learned from Julius Peppers himself not to say bad things about a team that is willing to overpay him. So both fo's are idiots.

It's a bad situation to be in, but the Panthers didn't trade a 1st rounder knowing they would be in that situation in less than a year. Raiders should have worked out a long term deal before making the trade or at the very least talked to him and gauged their ability to work it out in the future.

How old is Seymour? I'm thinking he is getting up there and trading a first rounder for him is absurd in the first place. Oakland should have been able to draft the best available in that position with their usual top 5 pick/ top 10 at least.

naw they will draft another 2nd rounder in the top 10
