Will receivers want to come to Carolina??

Isn't Mason approaching Jerry Rice age? Seriously, he's getting pretty old and doesn't have the speed or size that we need to compliment Smitty. We have enough average WRs. We have an elite guy and then the talent drops off to fair. We need someone who can fill the billing of very good or better than average at the very least.

Mason is too old (but he is about as dependable WR as you will see).

I don't know what he's smoking as far as a long term deal. At his age, a long term deal should be a couple of years, tops.

Seriously, are any good WRs "transition" tagged? We could make them an offer with some hilarious requirement in it that the other team can't possibly match. Like "owed $1bln if he ever dresses in the home locker room at INVESCO Field" for a Broncos player.

Money talks and bullshit walks. Furthermore, any receiver with a big ego---especially, like Boldin---would probably believe that he's the missing piece that would bring the championship to Carolina. I would think that they would think that this would be either Delhomme or Moore's last stand. In that event that Jake and/or Matt can't get it done in 2010, then a big name QB would be on his way in 2011 (either from the draft or otherwise). Moreover, they would have to believe that another sub par performance by a John Fox offense wold earn him a pink slip as well, making way for a coach who would ultimately be a tad more creative and aggressive with the passing game. Of course, if the team is successful with Delhomme or Moore behind center, then everyone will be happy anyway.

Finally, Smitty has even alluded to the fact that he is getting older and wouldn't mind stepping his role back a bit , and making way for some younger blood, which means that whoever is coming in might become the primary target sooner than they think.

That would be my sales point, which I probably wouldn't discuss publicly, but would have Smitty endorse and put the bug in any potential candidates ear while wining and dining.

Jordan Shipley might not be a bad pick. He isn't the quickest in the world but he has a reliable set of hands and a good attitude.

He also seems hungry to learn and improve.

If Drew Carter or Kerry Colbert were worth a poo, you would have heard something from them after they left Carolina.

Both are not NFL calibre receivers.

Colbert was a joke. Carter had great speed, but questionable hands.

Colbert might be a true bust, but Carter broke his leg in the pre-season after he left here to go to Oakland. Carter did step up and provided some big plays for us, but I maintain he didn't get a chance to show what he was capable of, because Jake is just not good at distributing the ball, and looking 'off' his receivers.

On the NFL Live show the other day (Tuesday I believe it was), the contributors there were RAVING about Matt Moore. They pointed out how much he accomplished while having just one real WR to work with, and then he (Smitty) got hurt as well, and Moore hardly missed a beat. they were saying that Moore is a great fit for here and should be the starter.

WRs come to die in Carolina.....Moose had it wrong. We run the ball, like to heavily use only 2 WR sets, and have Jake at QB.....Pat is right in his article.
