Everette Brown will have more sacks than Pepp in 2010...

The idea that others were getting sacks because Peppers was being double-teamed is pretty much bunk. Go back to Scott Fowler's mid-season article where he watched tape and counted the number of times Peppers was getting double-teamed... bottom line is that most of time time he was not.

I love Peppers, but I'll also be the first to admit he was overrated in many ways. He is an athletic freak, and Al Davis kind of guy... height + weight + speed... and when he was "on" he was a marvel to watch, but like many others have pointed out - he picked his shots and most of them resulted in sacks, but we might actually be better off if we can find a pair of DE's that apply constant pressure to the QB and produce less sacks.

Sacks are like the home run of Football, they are only really meaningful if they come at the right time.

Did you just say Peppers is overrated??lol.I think Peppers is underrated to panthers fans.He will be missed but we can make up for him if the entire line gets better.

I did, because we always look at his sacks and sacks are an overrated stat. Like I explained, I think Peppers picks his shots. It's like a batter who hits most of his home runs with nobody on base... it's great that he hit a homerun, but it still only results in 1 run scored, while the guy who consistently hits doubles to right field with runners on base scores 2 runs. Hitting a double to right field is not as glamorous as a home run, but it can actually be more productive.

Every DE in the NFL gets there sacks in bunches.Plus I think people undervalue Peppers in the run.He will be missed.and to say he is overrated is :out:

You can look at most of the DEs in the NFL, including the top ones, and they aren't consistently double-teamed. Teams do drop a guy in the back-field to help out a lot though, and I can almost bet Fowler's analysis didn't take this into account. Even the Bruce Smiths and Reggie Whites weren't doubled every single play. But today is a new day, and Pep is the gold standard.

All of these arguments about picking your spots, and making plays when they count is going down a slippery slope. This is the NFL. All the plays count.

You missed my point, sacks are not the most important thing a DE does. Don't get me wrong, I would rather have Peppers than not - but he is overrated.

well..dont you think one of the most important things to do in this scheme for a 43 DE is to get after the QB..dont sacks and QB hurries..etc reflect that for the most part.

But Peppers was also just as good in the run.Thats where he will be missed.we have to upgrade at DT

I'm pretty sure Fowler took that into consideration when he did his analysis and we can all remember games where Peppers appears to be playing patty-cakes with the OT blocking him. I would say Jared Allen is the gold standard of DE's at the moment.

The conventional wisdom in the NFL at this point is that Peppers takes plays off. Jon Beason felt so strongly about that he got on the radio and called him out... so there's really no point in trying to argue that anymore.

I think Peppers is like Randy Moss in the sense that he will shut it down if you make things tough for him early... he plays when he feels like it.

Back on topic, I think the order of the DE's we have on the roster now by # of sacks will be:

1. Charles Johnson

2. Everette Brown

3. Tyler Brayton

4. Hilee Taylor

The most important thing a DE in a 43 scheme can do is apply consistent pressure to the QB. If that results in a sack, then that's great - but it's more important for a DE to consistently apply pressure.

I think most would agree that Peppers fails to consistently apply pressure to the QB. Again, in my mind it's allot like Randy Moss - when the ball isn't coming to him on a play he's notorious for not even running his route and like Gamble said, when you make things tough on Randy he shuts it down.

I think Peppers works the same way... If he's asked to play contain for a significant portion of the game, or if a tackle gives him trouble at the beginning of a game he shuts it down and waits for a more favorable opportunity.

But no DE apply consistent pressure.I think all of our DE would have done better with a good pass rushing DT.

the things we miss the most about pep will be the things no one can replace. his athleticism and presence sometimes changes plays. i have said this a million times. you cant be overrated on a ....ALL PRO TEAM.... it is not like a probowl selection with fans voting. many fans missed the plays he makes just by being there, all we see is if he doesnt get a sack a lot, most of us dont break down plays where he is not involved in the play but makes one any way. running down rbs FROM BEHIND, pushing running plays the other way, shutting down screens(remember arizona game), blocking field goals, knocking down balls, playing in the flat, sometimes coming from the other side of the field to make plays with others are tripping over themselves.
