Jake got his extension to save cap because of the Peppers tag.

Also, those players aren't as crappy as Jake. People still complain about Gamble and Gross being overpaid, but they played well during their "contract" year. Jake played like poo and got that extension. Maybe one of the worst moves in our franchise history...

:iagree:.

But still, Pep would leave anyway if Jake never got the extension & I'm sure of that. Again, we offer Pep a long-term deal a year before Jake got the extension. That right there just prove it.

I get what you're saying and I personally blame Peppers the most for this situation as well. I think it's just a case of "too little, too late". I just wish Peppers would have stepped up and voiced his displeasure with Trgo/scheme back then...he had JR behind him

But, would Jake get the extension if Peppers would have left? :conf:

The extension to Jake had cap implications but wasn't primarily due to Peppers. There were other players like Smitty who could have been restructured. The bottom line is that they felt that locking him up was a good move that obviously went very wrong. But in the end Pepper's wasn't the reason Jake got the extension.

As for Pepper's, we franchised him last year not because we wanted to pay him 17 million but really felt we could sign him long-term. Hurney indicated in his interview that he made an aggressive attempt to do so but Peppers wanted out. He got his wish. Hurney doesn't believe he will ever sign long term no matter what the offer. So he didn't want to throw another 20 million at him when he would likely grab it and not agree to be traded. I don't see him screwing up as much as realizing that he wasn't going to get something done with Peppers and going in a different direction. It would have been nice to get something for Peppers but he wasn't going to work with the Panthers. In the end we got alot out of that first round pick. I can't say that I would abandon the Panthers over a few bad moves. I am not arrogant enough to actually believe I know better or could have anticipated how crazy the Pepper's situation has become.

Hurney has done a lot more right than he has wrong. He isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but seems to be pretty solid to me.

I'm sure he would've got one if Pep left last year. That why I never buy in the fact that Jake getting an extension is why we couldn't signed Pep. Especially when you look at what happend 2 yrs. ago when we try to lock him for long-term contract which he turned down.

Yes he would have gotten the extension.

Jake was extended to Cap Reasons....happens every year to many teams.

Jake had just led the team to a 12-4 record and the 2nd seed in the playoffs. It is easy to look back and judge the decision now. But, it is the type of deal that is made all the time in this league.

Agree. Even though I think they pay Jake more than he should've gotten after the Playoffs disaster, but they probably never expect him to continue to make that same mistake recently this season with how we went 12-4 as you said. It's happend.
