What it will take...

lightsout

Out of boredom, I decided to see what it would take for us in the final month and a half of the season to make the playoffs. In case some of you didn't know, we sit 28th in the league...

-Win practically every game. Can only drop maybe 6 at the most by no more than 1 point (maybe 2).

-Have an average points of +4 for every game.

-Philly, Boston, and Montreal all have to start losing pretty badly.

-In order for the 3rd point to be true, we have to beat Boston and Montreal in March by at least 3.

-We have 5 divisional games. MUST win all of them by at least 2.

-Pray every night, drink our milk, don't run with scissors, and wear our seat belts.

If we do all of this, we have a shot at 8th in the Eastern.

With all that being said, if anybody is holding out hope, forget about it. Have to play the Pens and the Caps a few times each and they will probably finish out towards the top of the league. We get some upsets, don't get upset, and have a few dominant games, there is still an outside shot. If it were to happen, this team would go down in history as being the best comeback team in the history of the NHL.

I wouldn't say we need to lose. Yeah, that pick is big. But we had one of the best 1st rounders in last years draft...and we traded him. <_<. For JR it is about KEEPING the fan base. Sure, we understand wanting that 1st pick and losing to get it. But let's face it, your casual fans won't show up if you drop off the face of the Earth and with over a month of games left, that could be big in a struggling economy. In terms of team, yes, we need to lose. In terms of franchise, the more we win, the better.

    • I will say, I'm not a Bryce hater.  I have seen definite improvement in his play the past few weeks.  Hopefully he builds on it and becomes an elite qb.  In the back of my mind though there is a little voice that says, maybe this is mostly Canales and if he can do this with a player as limited physically as Bryce, what could he do with a young qb who doesn't have as many limitations.    That said, it is probably actually a combination of everything and you've got to give credit to Bryce for coming back from the benching looking the best he ever has.
    • Yeah that is highly accurate. I'm sure he did something decent but almost everywhere you look it was bad. I'm on board with judging Morgan for what happens under his authority, when it is his rep on the line with these decisions. They made the right decision on Burns this year, and Burns pushed them to it. For 5 mil less per season we might still have him, so I appreciate Burns for going the extra mile with the greed.
    • I do think it's best not to get excited - as you highlight, we've seen great games here and there from otherwise mediocre QBs. But, it's also important to remember the context. That was one of CMC's many combined 100+ yard games for us (close to 150 with 2 total TDs if I recall). While a lot of us acknowledge TB was a decent veteran but not the answer, the point was he WAS a veteran and by the end of that season we knew his ceiling. The hope with Bryce is he continues to grow. Worth taking a look at how different the passing charts are, too... All but 8 throws basically within 5 yards of the LoS. 8 throws beyond 10 yards, and with 49 attempts!   vs Only 4 of BY's throws were behind the LoS, Nearly half his passes were beyond 10 yards. Just a very different depth of target selection.  Bryce was threatening all over the field. Fwiw, Bryce's TD % this year is pretty close to Teddy's that year - but that's including the two terrible games he started. Over the last 4 games, he's above it, so let's see if he can keep that up.
