Carolina Panthers to determine Julius Peppers' fate this week

The best for Pep and the team would be if he walked into the FO and said he'll sign a 1-year $10 million contract. After this season he is free.

He gets a big paycheck and another year for things to work out here or for another team to really develop a need for him. Now, of course, the negotiations and the league leave the 2011 season way up in the air. The one year contract leaves both Pep and the Panthers sitting better no matter what happens.

If there is no football, Pep's going to get the year off anyway. However, he would be completely free with no ability to franchise him for the 2012 season. He could walk without even a goodbye note. Or he could stay if he found his home and heart here again. On the Panther's side, they would only be on the hook for a decent salary for 2010, hopefully getting in exchange a first class performance from a star that by conventional wisdom should be aging into the downside of his career. They wouldn't owe him guaranteed money in a season with no games. And in 2012, if there are no better options out there, they could lay a dollar amount of the table for his services, without being raked over the coals.

The Panthers, on the other hand, would be in a better position of evaluating his long-term worth.

Samuel L, here is my theroy. I think the Panthers are completely over trying to work with Pepper's agent. I don't think the non-communication has anything to do with Peppers personally. His agent has filled Peppers with the thoughts that he will make $100 million plus if he hits FA. I think the Panthers want to sign him long term but can't do so with Carney, or whatever his name is, in the way. So, the only way for them to show Peppers that the contracts they have offered in the past are reasonable, they are taking the risk of letting him walk and see for himself what his market value is.

Either Carney is sacred to death of Peppers actually hitting FA and in the end will get a deal done before hand or he really believes a team will pay Peppers the $100 million plus contract. Either way I think Peppers is going to learn this offseason that his agent isn't as good as he thinks he is.

For gods sake they should at least tag him and trade him to wherever he wants to go for a 2nd or 3rd. Better than nothing if he's gonna walk free.

If we tag him, he'll sit on the tender until training camp and take 20 million to play for us... then hit FA next year.

We don't want to pay him 20 million for one year (and neither does anyone else in the league) with the potential still out there for a cap this coming year, so we don't want to use the tag on him and get stuck with him at that price. We could still try and trade him during camp when he signs the tender, but he could sabotoge any trade we try to make by refusing to sign long-term with the other team.

We basically have until Thursday to try and reach some kind of contract agreement with him, which won't happen (because once again, he has no motiviation to do that right now with the prospect of either making 20 million for one year or being the hottest FA on the market in an uncapped year) so I'm almost 100% sure we will let him walk.

Possible. But I'd like to think all parties involved would be happy with my scenario. Basically, we tell Pep that if he signs the tender, we will trade him to any team he wants for just a 2 and a 4. He's happy wherever he goes, his new team is happy to give up so little for a potential HOF DE, and we're happy cuz we at least got something.

And third overall highest player in the entire league in 2009. Notice I didn't say he is a bad agent. In reality, between the rookie contract Pep signed and the tag in 09, he's done a great job at getting Pepper's the most money.

I could be completely wrong, but I think Carney has just simply overvalued his client in regard to getting an extention with the Panthers. If Carney can get that $100 million plus contract with another team, fine. The guy is the best agent in all of sports but I would be completely fine with that contract or the $21 tag not being with Panthers.
