The NFL Draft: Huddle vs. Hurney

Delhommey

Recommended Posts

2007

Board favorite: Laron Landry (Oh dear God) followed by Patrick Willis.

Hurney pick: Jon Beason

Verdict: Hurney in any scenario. Getting Landry would have involved trading up which would have made it even more of a disaster. Willis is obviously no slouch, but Beason's lower salary and the fact we picked up Kalil as well makes this still be a no brainer.

Reason Hurney will be lambasted: WE COULD HAVE HAD REVIS!!!!

2008

Board favorite: Ryan Clady/Chris Williams/Jeff Otah, Brandon Albert, Derrick Harvey (a lot of us realized it was dumb back then), Jonathan Stewart as a dark horse.

Hurney pick: Jon Stewart

Verdict: Mixed. You can't argue with the talent, only what it took to get it and most of the boards picks turned out pretty good as well. The passion some argued with for us to take Harvey still makes me chuckle, as does the fact Jacksonville gave up so much to get him.

Reason why Hurney will be lambasted: WE GAVE UP OUR FIRST!!!!

2009

Board Favorite: All over the shop. Our pick was so low, nobody really knew where it was going to go. Lots of talk of interior linemen (Levitre, Unger) and DT's (Brace, Moala, Marks) with the occasional Pat White argument.

Hurney Pick: Everette Brown

Verdict: Who knows? Brown at least showed promise, and if Peppers walks, we're not sunk, but it will certainly stink sitting on the sidelines for what many are calling the best first round in almost 30 years. Certainly no one ballyhooed on this board has stood out

Reason why Hurney will be lambasted: WE GAVE UP OUR FIRST!!!!

2008 I wanted to trade up two spots ahead of Denver to get Clady. Then take Rice or Forte in the 2nd. 3rd I wanted either DaJuan Morgan or Thomas DeCoud for safety, not Godfrey.

Would have been nice to keep our 1st rounder the next year. Then in 2009 we use the 28th overall on Everette Brown and we still have our first this year. And I'd take Sean Smith over Martin in the 2nd.

Our drafts have been really good, I haven't had many complaints. And there's plenty of good late round guys I missed on that they took.

Steve Smith:

2009: 1220 yards 7 tds

Jay Alford:

2007: Nothing Really

2008: 15 tkls and 2.5 sacks

2009: IR

Zak Deossie: Backup LS/LB and Special teams (good special teamer

Kevin Boss:

2009: 59 tkls 46 solos 1 sack 4 PD 1 int

Amhad Bradshaw: (Got him in the 7th, nice)

2007: 23 att 190 yds 1 tds

2008: 67atts 355 yds 1 td

2009: 163 atts 778 yds 7 tds

His 2008 Draft

Kenny Phillips: 32nd overall Pick (Defense fell apart after his injury this year)

2008: 67 tkls 55 solos 5 PD 1 Int

2009: 13 tkls 9 solos 2 ints 2 PD (IR)

Terrell Thomas: 63rd Pick

2008: 45 tkls 39 solos 4 PD 1 int

2009: 85 Tkls 14 solo 13 PD 5 Ints 1 FF

Mario Mannaningham: 95th Pick:

2008: 4 rec 26 yds

2009: 57 rec 882 yds 5 tds

The Rest have been Decent depth

You got to admit this guy is good 7 starters (8 if you include Bradshaw) in 2 drafts is impressive as hell.

Very good thread. For the most part, I've been impressed with Hurney's drafts. Our first round picks have been very solid under him. And he's found some steals in the later rounds.

But yeah, he will have to earn some $$$ during this draft, without any first round picks.

12 of those players have started and several on this list will be starters next year.

Hurney's been better than average, not astounding. If you look he's done best in the first and last rounds respectively.
