Transition tag him

A transition tag, which gives the chosen player the average salary of the top 10 players at a position. All the home team gets for a transition-tagged player is the right to match an offer the player can generate from another club. There is no draft compensation involved.

If we are just going to let him walk, why not do this. We will pay him less, plus we can force a team to take a poison pill if they offer a huge contract. But if they offer a smaller contract we match and we keep him.

Benefits:

- saves us cap space (or just $$)

- provides more $ to lock up T Davis

- Doesnt let him just walk away
