Ah - so THAT'S why the NFL can't sell individual team broadcast rights...

One ongoing topic with all the Sunday Ticket posts is "why can't the NFL just sell me the Panthers games".

Ends up that all the discussion about the upcoming NFL International game in Brazil gives us the explanation as to why we can't have nice things.

Quote

The calendar gives the NFL an opportunity to televise Friday night or Saturday games on the first week of the 2024 season, since the Sports Broadcasting Act doesn’t restrict such broadcasts until the second Friday of September.

When September 1 lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, the NFL’s post-Labor Day kickoff weekend may include Friday night and/or Saturday games. (The NFL agreed to that limitation in exchange for the broadcast antitrust exemption, which allows the NFL to sell TV rights as a league and not on a team-by-team basis.)

So whoever buys the TV rights (CBS, FOX, Amazon, NBC, YouTube....) has to deal with the entire league rather than picking and choosing individual teams to cherry-pick. It prevents undesirable teams (smaller fan bases, unprofitable commercialization, etc)  from being left without a broadcast option.

Oh yeah, there's going to be a game in Brazil next year. Rumor is either Dallas or Miami
