Bobby Slowik- Meet the Candidate- Part 4 of 12

Bobby Slowik, OC- Houston Texans

                Slowik has risen to fame this year with the impressive performance of CJ Stroud. In 2020, I predicted Tepper would hire Mike McCarthy he instead hired Matt Rhule. I predicted in 2022 he would go after Shane Steichen and he instead hired Frank Reich. I can see Slowik earning the job in Charlotte simply because I can visualize David Tepper at the podium talking about replicating what happened with CJ in 2024 with Bryce in 2025. (Despite their different style of play)

                Slowik isn’t exactly a bad candidate. I don’t think I would be ready to pull the trigger on a HC job just yet, but he is definitely on his way. He is the son of longtime Defensive Assistant, Bob Slowik who spent time in Green Bay, Denver, and Washington among other places. 36-year-old Slowik was born in New Jersey but would later be raised in Wisconsin before playing WR at Michigan Tech. Bobby got his start in 2011 with the Washington Redskins. At the time Mike Shanahan was the Head Coach. Bobby’s father was the DBs coach under Jim Haslett and he was given a job as Defensive Assistant. Bobby would be fired with the rest of the staff following the 2013 season.

                Bobby would not coach again until 2017 where he would be hired by Kyle Shanahan who had taken over as HC of the 49ers. In 2017 and 2018 he would serve as a Defensive Quality Control coach before being moved to Offensive Assistant in 2019 and 2020. He would be promoted to Offensive Pass Game Specialist in 2021 and Passing Game Coordinator in 2022 where the 49ers would finish 13^th in passing. In 2023, the Defensive Coordinator (Demeco Ryans) would accept the Head Coach role for the Houston Texans and Bobby would follow as Offensive Coordinator. Currently with rookie QB CJ Stroud at the reins, the Texans are 6^th in total offense, 2^nd in passing, and 24^th in rushing.

                Perhaps Bobby has learned how to be a HC after spending time with the Shanahans. Perhaps he just happened to be in the right place at the right time with his Dad’s NFL connections. Time will tell, especially if he is given the reigns of an NFL team. Out of the “young offensive mind” candidates, I feel like he is the biggest risk.

Slowik is the guy to pursue IMO. I think he is about a year away from being a really hot candidate so it’s striking the iron before it’s hot and he will probably be more attainable than BJ.

Slowik is intriguing for sure, as someone who was high on Stroud in the draft I don't know how much of it is talent vs coaching but you can't argue with results. He's a bit too green for me though. 1 year as OC to HC is a huge jump. The guy who started the young offensive mind trend, McVay, despite being super young had 3 full seasons as OC before the Rams hired him. Steichen had 3 full seasons and 1 partial as interim OC. If we go young offensive mind I'd prefer at least 2 years of OC experience.

Agree fully with this. 

I just keep coming back to Evero on this. Perhaps a guy like Klint Kubiak is the next Slowik, but for OC. I do agree that Slowik is intriguing, while possibly being a year or two early for a HC gig.

One thing I don't understand is how a Shannahan disciple can't get a run game going.

That should be concerning to people and attributes more credit to Stroud than Slowik in terms of Houston's leap forward.

Also, the scheme in Houston would not benefit Bryce, much more vertical routes than what I think he is capable of heaving downfield. We'd need a more typical WC style offense for Bryce to succeed. Since he's only been OC for a year I don't know if he's capable of tailoring an offense to the strengths of his QB or if his QB is just the right guy for their system.

Agree on the run game aspect. But if Slowik was the right guy I don't care if Bryce fits his system or not. We've seen enough from Bryce that if a new (legit) HC wants to move on from him and bring his own QB in, then by all means that's what we should do. Bringing in a HC to fit Bryce's skillset is just backwards.

I mean Andy Reid jumped from QB Coach to HC of the Eagles. It's rare, but it does happen.

The more I learn about him the more I'm starting to think he's the guy. This might just be a Mike McDaniel situation.
