3 Reasons why we can't release Jake

Once again, after thinking (briefly) about this, I've changed my mind..this isn't that serious, so this will be short..

1. The Cap hit is to much. With possibly an uncapped year, we need all the money we can muster up.

2.Moore needs a veteran QB, we need a backup.

3.He has done to much to release him. What a slap in the face to the guy that got us to our first SB.

1. The cap hit for releasing him isn't significantly different than the one for keeping him.

2. McCown could fill that role, and do it cheaper.

3. No one is untouchable.

I don't think it'll happen, but it could be done and make sense.

If we pick up his signing bonus we are signalling that we are voiding the guaranteed money paid to him after this year. So by paying him more now we are not paying him down the road when there would be a possible cap hit. If we don't pick up any of the options then we might be signalling he will be here for a few years or will be costing us dead cap space.

With an uncapped year likely, this would be the time to cut him and dump the cap number. He could be re-signed for much less (do you think anither team would take him?) and provide the veteran influence and compete for the position. In regard to a slap in the face- its a business Jake, nothing personal. Will he be cut? IMO no...

We pay him the same whether we cut him or not. Simple economics say you hold onto him if you have to pay him anyway. As I mentioned above if you want to get rid of him after this year you give him the 10 million signing bonus which voids future guaranteed payments and he is due a salary of 2.3 million in 2010. If you cut him you pay the same amount since he is guaranteed payments of $12.7 over the next 3 years which become immediately due and you have to pay someone else to take his place as well as still paying Jake. It makes no sense financially and this year appears to be all about the money.

As much as people are going to hate having Jake as starter, you might want to get use to it because while some will assume that Moore is the starter heading into camp, the coaching staff (especially Fox) see it differently. Not defending Jake but just saying that Jake going in as starter for the 2010 season is not out of question

Furthermore, so many people make such a big deal out of his contract but is isn't as bad as many make it out to be. If he were to be released, it wouldn't really count to much for the Panthers.
