Prisco on Peppers

stupid. hate when people judge a players success on sacks alone. were they even watching the Panthers play this year? Peppers was getting pressure on the QB on damn near every snap, why do they think we finished 4th in the league in turnovers on defense? PRESSURE ON THE QUARTERBACK. I still remember the Cards game early in the season where they were dedicating an entire side of their o-line to contain Peppers, and he was still dominating them. or the Vikes game when he caused a pro-bowl tackle to get benched.

Peppers is a genetic specimen, flat out athletic monster. I guess they forgot to mention that little Giants d-line that Strahan lead in 2007 that completely DESTROYED one of the best offenses of all time.

You don't know what you have until it's gone. Unfortunately we're about to find out.

For this year that could be a possibility because Pep was happier this year than he was in 2008 or 2007. After the bye week, Pep was great (and even before the bye week he was great against Philly). The only times where he wasn't was when his hand was broken. But the haters wanna count that as "taking plays/games off" because it supports their agenda. They see a play where he isn't making a sack or tackle in the backfield as "OMGZ HE'S TAKING PLAYS OFF!" without realizing that he could've been told to do something else and that any other time he's been playing really well.

...And that he's getting pressure on the QB like kenny just said

So you're saying you know Peppers role every play? You know if he's supposed to stay home and keep containment or hold off the OT for the OLB? Do you know he's been told to see whether or not he should drop back in coverage? Do you know he's supposed to crash left or right? Do you know that his role might be to keep the QB in the pocket for the pass rush to come? No you don't. You'll be kidding yourself if you say you did. Nobody knows what he is told to do every play. Think it's a coincidence Thomas Davis was starting to have his best year playing on Peppers side? Pep sure does get alot of praise from his teammates as well as other teams teammates and front offices for someone that "takes plays off". And if you count the games where his hand was broken as "taking plays/games off" too, you're stuipid as hell.

Did I say he was taking plays off? No, but nice try. I simply asked what proof you had to contradict those who were and you offered none.

What proof is there that he is taking plays off? No one can ever have proof that he does. There's just more logical explanations other than simply saying he's "taking plays off" which I offered.

You were laughing at other peoples explanations so I figured you had proof of some sort to the contrary.

Prisco is and always will be a douchebag. Sacks sacks sacks sacks sacks...give me a break. It's not the only metric for a DE.

Especially for Peppers, give me the 5 forced fumbles a year and a few ints to add on to the sacks. Plus the fact that other teams have to game plan against him, he forces plays to the opposite side of the field. We can overload on the opposite side. I could swear 75% of the Peppers haters are NC State fans that have the Carolina envy and hate anyone who was ever a Tar Heel even tho it has no relevance at this stage. If you are a Panthers fan, you want Peppers here. Period.

I'm confident Charles Johnson can replace him, but I would like to keep him if possible. There's a lot of great memories I associate with Pep, and it may be selfish as a fan, but I think of the guys who have been drafted by us and played here, Pep and Smitty have a very good chance of making the Hall of Fame when they hang em up...

I'd like to keep guys like that here for their entire career. And I don't think Pep will be suddenly "washed up" at 30. I think he's got at least 4 more excellent years left.

Charles Johnson is in a good position to replace Peppers right now. He has shown a good nose for getting to the QB and is still very young. Him and Everette Brown were brought in to be the futures at the DE position, and with Ron Meeks at D-Coordinator now, he likes fast, undersized guys, like we saw on the Colts.

Now when you've got a guy like Peppers, IMO you can't just let a guy like that walk away, but the article by Prisco brings up some good points. He is entering the age where players start to decline. Peppers is an extreme case because he is such a physical freak, but not even he can hide from father time. If the Panthers are smart, they are working the phones trying to get offers on the table if they decide to tag him. Getting a first for Peppers would make me believe in our front office again.

Peppers will surely be missed but frankly his perceived worth is more than the reality and we can't justify paying 20 million a year. He will end up somewhere else on a contract which like Haynesworth on paper makes him the highest paid player in the game but which ultimately he never sees the last 2 or 3 years unless he performs well above predictions.

As for his rep taking plays off, it is there from what I have observed. Peppers is the type of player that can dominate a game and when motivated is almost unstoppable. There are series and games where his performance is frankly pedestrian at best. Sure teams gameplan for him but at times he has been handled by single blockers who were not probowlers or even great players. Looking for proof will yield you what you want or expect to find. Finding an example one way or the other isn't going to be definitive anyway. Normally Peppers at 75% is better than other players at 100%. But when he wants to be paid as the best and his numbers are only top 10, there is a disconnect.
