Joey Porter anyone?

so 9 sacks this past season in a so called "down year" and 17.5 the year before... sounds like a horrible thought.

He produced 9 sacks, 5 hits and 11 pressures in 354 pass rushes. In comparison Pep produced 10 sacks, 10 hits and 33 pressures in 446 pass rushes. Porter had an impact in 7% of his pass rushing snaps, Pep had an impact in 11%.

Whilst he has a little value as a pass rusher, what is really worrying about him is his performance in run support. At times he might as well not bother, others he is moderate at best. The problem is, is that he should be able to have more impact in run support in a 3-4 scheme than as a 4-3 DE, yet he struggles in the 3-4. Moving him to a 4-3 DE position will give him even more problems as he will be going directly against OTs, which would be a big mistake.

The thing is, Porter has basically become obsolete. He is no better in run support than Miami's other OLBs and Cameron Wake has completely supplanted him as a pass rusher.

Cameron Wake managed 7 sacks, 6 hits and 20 pressures in just 134 pass rushes. That is 25%, so he makes an impact once in every 4 snaps rushing the passer.

Face it. Porter is not an elite pass rusher. He is poor in run support. You are suggesting you take him OUT of his most suited position and putting him in a position that exposes his weaknesses and limits his benefits. I also strongly encourage you to find more than three effective DEs who are around 250 lbs. The guys who are able to operate at that weight are the exception, not the rule.

If not mistaken abrahamn, mathis and freeny all play 4-3 and also evrette brown drafted by US to play 4-3 weighs 256... Why is everyone so high on pep switching to a 3-4 if hes never played it before?... 11% to 7% is the diffrence between 90 million and a 1 yr shot? take a chance at least. this is like telling me terell suggs cant play 4-3 when hes 50/50 3pt or standing in baltimore, o he also weighs only 260. Just because uve never seen him do it doesnt mean he cant. He led a superbowl defense and a 1-15 defense to the playoffs im sure porter could make the switch.

Brown is a rookie who will almost certainly out on some weight this off season as most rookies do.

I do not know anyone who is 'high' on Pep moving to 3-4 OLB other than himself.

No one is worth $90 million, the point was that we would be getting a guy who literally can only be a pass rusher, put him into a scheme that negates his effectiveness and yet Pep is more productive in every sense of the word. If you look closely at Porter, you can see he has real trouble getting off his blocks when fully engaged which is why he is so boom or bust. He still has a bit of burst, as if he gets through, he gets a sack. However he achieves little in terms of pressure and hits, because he hardly ever beats his man. Now put him into a scheme that demands he beats an OT every play and you will see someone who can't shed blocks and will ultimately get taken out of the play every time. The 3-4 is the ideal scheme for him, it frees him up to make use of his explsoive first step and closing speed and limits the times he has to shed blocks against linemen.

Incidently, the game against us, Porter produced his best game of the season by a LONG way. 3 pressure, 1 hit and 1 sack.

Porter's 17 sack season was a touch misleading. He has 567 pass rushing snaps and in addition to his 17 sacks, he only had 9 hits and 22 hurries. That's 8% of his plays he made an impact. Looking even closer, after week 10 he only had 5 sacks, 2 hits and 10 hurries which is a significant decline after the firs half of the season. When you see the stats laid out he basically had one or two HUGE days and then was pretty consistently average for the rest of the season. Sacks are always misleading, as they do not tell the whole story, you need to look at his overall contribution.

He does not want out of Miami because he is sick of it, it's because he was being taken out of certain pass rushing situations in favor of Cameron Wake and that his starting role was not guarenteed. Being an egotistical guy, he said it was a starter or nothing. So Miami were more inclined to cut their loses with him, as they have guys who are equally or more productive than he is.

The thing about Suggs, is that he isn't actually an elite pass rusher. He is however an elite physical freak, who is just as good at stopping the run than he is pass rushing. He is more of a complete player than Porter and is always used to maximise his effectiveness. He also plays in an incredibly complicated Baltimore defense which 'spreads the love' as they never generate just one guy with big stats. They manage to get everyone being effective and everyone playing a part. Suggs almost has a stone in weight over Porter as well AND he is a much more effective at shedding blocks.
