PFT: No tag for Pep

There's a good chance we'll let him walk, simply because no DE is worth that kind of money (and I love me some Peppers) and the Panthers don't want to run the risk of tagging him and then getting stuck with him at that price if they can't work out a trade.

Once Peppers knows he's gonna make that kind of money for one year and be a FA the next, why would he agree to sign with anybody else for less? If he won't do a long term contract, then whatever team we try to trade him to will owe him his franchise tender.... nobody is gonna pay that for him.

Be prepared to watch him walk, I'd guess that's the most likely scenario.

raleigh-panther makes sense. As John Fox likes to say the "sky will not fall" if Pep leaves.

I like Pep as much as the next guy but his salary is out of line with his production and will only get worse as he ages. He may play lights out for a new team but that doesn't mean he would have here. Sometimes change is good.

If we slap the tag on him he won't sign it until it's too late to trade him because he knows the 21+mil. salary will not be matched. The nfl is a business and Pep. is running his business pretty well. The Panthers need to also. Paying him 21+mil. would be absurd.

The Panthers didn't win a SuperBowl with Peppers.

Quick, name a DE on the Saints?

If he goes, he goes. Again, the Panthers offered to make him the highest paid player after his miserable 2007 season. He turns around and says, one day, 'it was not sincere' and then says this year 'I didn't earn it so I couldn't take it'. Sure Julius, whatever.

I think Jerry Richardson is sick and tired of being sick and tired with this guy.

The grass is greener Julius, go.

Agree 100%

Or an even bigger blunder if we tag him for 21+ mill and cannot trade him crippling the team once again.

Nah, wouldn't cripple the team this year because of no cap. At this point, it'd be more of a "we're tired of your bullshit, peace out" thing if they really let Peppers walk for nothing, because money isn't a problem in an uncapped year.

No one can argue the fact that Peppers is a heck of a player but i don't think we will be that bad off without him. They will have plenty of money to spend on a compliment for Smith or to acquire another DE and pay T Davis. I know this year is prob going to be uncapped but Jerry Richardson isn't Jerry Jones nor is he Dan Snyder so he isn't going to break the bank when he doesn't have to. There will be no question who the leader of the D will be, and I can kinda see all these guys rallying around Beason. We don't have to have Pepp to win the SB. No one else has.

Good point.

A lot of guys on this board seem to think all the FO has to do is tag Pep and trade him. What if Pep doesn't want to be traded? The only way they can tag him is if they are willing to pay him the big bucks. The owners are trying to get away from that very thing and JR is one of the leaders. They very well may allow him to walk, they may have to.

hey all you dumb simpering fools giggling in your sleep about how we can spend as much money as we want because there's no cap, the money is still money. Just because it's an uncapped year doesn't mean the tooth fairy covers all the bills. Jerry still has to write that check to someone he might have soured on, and Hardee's money isn't Paul Allen Microsoft money, or Dan Snyder Spring Break Rape Package money.
