The Jacksonville Jaguars have released wide receiver Torry Holt, offensive lineman Tra Thomas and defensive lineman Rob Meier, the team announced today.

"After completing our postseason roster evaluation, we've made the decision in the best interest of the organization to release three veteran players with tremendous playing history in the league," Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith said. "All three players have played 10 or more years in the NFL and have made a positive impact on the Jaguars organization. These decisions certainly weren't easy ones, as Torry, Tra and Rob have over 350 starts between them and they still have the ability contribute for other teams in the league."

We've known for a while that Holt and Thomas would be cut, and the release of Meier, who spent 2009 on injured reserve, is no surprise. Smith has made it clear that the Jaguars want to get younger.

"I think we've laid a good foundation and we just need to continue to build," Smith said. "We feel a lot better about our roster heading into the 2010 season."

Are you guys high?

Really? Sign Torry Holt? The guy's best days are behind him. Hell, his final mediocre years are far behind him. He's s great, nice guy that's tied to North Carolina, but comeon. His career is over. We need to think young, not old, at WR.

sign Holt and draft a WR. Holt still has about 3 years or so left in him. thats a good amount of time for a WR to get use to the NFL.

This offense does not suit Holt's talents, or the talents he once had. The perfect compilment to Smith is actually Moose, or again the Moose that we once knew. We don't need speed guy, we need a guy like Welker who will either a) take pressure of Smith or B) make a lot of catches while Smith is being doubled.

Holt wouldn't be used to replace Moose. Ricky Prohel was needed to get Carolina to the SB in 03

Agreed but Holt was never a Ricky Prohel type of reciever and I don't think, although I could be wrong, he could adjust to become one. In that situation I think Moose is actually the best person out there to take on the "Prohel" type of position but they have to find someone to be the #2 reciever that is better than Moose to take his spot first.

With that being said, there is nothing wrong with bringing Holt in to try out as long as the excpection isn't that he is going to be a #2 and the money isn't so high that it takes away from what could be spent on other players/positions.
