Remember Wes Welker. Went undrafted, ran a 4.6 40 time? Wait what, Wes Welker ran a 4.6 40 time? yea! Can you tell on game day this dude only runs a 4.6 40? more evidence that 40 times dont mean s***

For an example of this, look no further than my personal hero, the beloved Wes Welker. Everyone, including Texas Tech, overlooked his abilities. All these teams saw was his diminutive height (5’9”) and mediocre speed (4.6). Wes proved everyone completely wrong throughout his career. The Longhorns and Aggies were left wondering how Welker completely torched their defenses year after year, and the Sooners were kicking themselves for letting Wes get out of Oklahoma. However, even after his illustrious collegiate career, Welker went undrafted.

I wouldn't say 40 times means s***.. but I would go as far to say that a 40 time can not be more heavily weighted than other factors.. Chris Johnson's speed for instance, converts to the football field.. and some guy's track speed, does not convert to the football field.. it's an inexact science.

Hate to be devil's advocat but Welker doesn't look fast and I am not surprised by that 40 time whatsoever. 40 times are only really relevant to get a concept on how athletic the player is, and for the CBs and WRs how they can deal with the deep ball.

I haven't looked it up, but i bet Welker's cone drill and shuttle were pretty good. That's where his true measure lies as he is very explosive in andout of cuts and has exceptional agility. Couple that with crisp and deft routes and you have the perfect slot guy, provided he can catch ;)

I think 40 times are just as important for the big guys, because it gives an indication to scouts if they get by with technique or natural physical athleticism. It also gives an indication on the physical 'ceiling' on some, as a toned guy with decent technique who runs slow obviously has physical limitations. However a sloppy runner with a little excess weight and a decent time could be moulded to be a physical specimen.

Welker does not look fast on the field. The use him correctly on short little routes. I don't think I've ever seen him outrun anyone. No surprise he ran a 4.6. I think 40 times can be very important. Just look at Chris Johnson. His 40 time is the reason he was drafted where he was, and look how that played out.

There is a guy on NFL.com that has a formula that combines all of these and more to get a real good indication of a players true "football speed". I believe he was a scout at one time and read his article a few years ago on this subject.
