the panthers front office was so quick to sign Jake the Mistake to a long contract and an assload of money, but they're so reluctant to give Julius Peppers a contract?
Because they were also ready to sign Peppers the Man of Tin to a long contract and an assload of money but he said no?

When I look at it, there are two possibilities going on here:

1. It's the timing. The team has not shown signs of giving Fox or any other key players extensions right now because of the potential lockout. You would think Pep and Carey would had taken that into consideration last year and taken what was offered after it was clear he wasn't going anywhere for at least another year.

2. Peppers is like Kris Jenkins all over again. They are tired of him and will do anything to get him off the team. This time, however, they will likely get nothing in return.

With Jenkins we agreed to trade him and tried to find a team that would meet our needs for draft picks and give him what he wanted. I suspect with Peppers we would do the same if he didn't want to be here. Or we would sign him longterm if he would be reasonable about it. But Peppers doesn't trust us and like last year could refuse to sign the tender meaning we are stuck with him if we tag him. And I don't think we would pay him the 20 million. Honestly I think he will end up going somewhere else for half the money we were going to give him. Between his own pride and a douche for an agent it may very well work out poorly for him.

It really comes down to how much money teams are willing to spend with a looming lockout. The impression I get is that most are pinching those pockets but there will be at least one that will try to buy themselves a championship. That's where Pep will go and be the next overpriced free agent that turns out to be a waste of money.
