Lombardi advice to Tepper

On his GM Shuffle podcast yesterday, Mike Lombardi spent the first 20 minutes of the show talking about advice he would give to Dave Tepper. I think there's some good insight here. I linked the show below at the moment they start discussing the Panthers. I'll let everyone draw their own conclusions/thoughts from this but wanted to post. Great listen. He hit on a lot of good stuff. Needing a tam builder vs playcaller HC is a solid take. Giving Teppers other issues itmakes sense even if it'snot what I would like to see. 

The best is when he said how Tepper doesn't get how the league works. The consensus take was shattering to some common myths around here. 'He has to hire people that are not scared of him' to get an honest opinion. Read about history? I fugging wish he would. It would save him so much time and wasted seasons left figuring stuff out others already put on display. No honesty and everyone is out for survival, the brutal truth. Clean the entire house please.

interesting perspective and he's not wrong.

the biggest problem we have right now isn't running the offense (even though that's huge).

the biggest problem we have right now is a lack of identity and a losing culture. until we get someone that can instill fight back in them or just dismantle the team and start over pretty much from scratch, we aren't going anywhere long term.

it will likely have to be someone that isn't afraid of tepper and who tepper respects. it will have to be someone that can step in and take control of everything to build the team right. let tepper settle in on his vision for the team, what he wants their identity to be, and then find a coach who can build that and give him the control to do it. 

this collaboration  experiment we've got going on is a failure. you don't need a bunch of brilliant minds. you need one decisive mind who will get poo done.

The root behind Tepper seeking advice from so many people is that he still thinks he's the smartest person in the room.

Basically, he believes all he has to do is get a bunch of advice, put it all together in his own miind and he'll do the right thing.

As long as he keeps believing that, nothing's going to change.

100% agree with this and it’s why I’m not sold on Ben Johnson. He may be that team builder we need, I’m not sure. But I wouldn’t hire anyone else just based on how their offense did. This is why I’m on board with Harbaugh (I was last year, too) and even willing to consider Bill Belicheck, though he wouldn’t be my first choice. 
 

That’s why things worked so well initially with John Fox and Ron. They came in and changed the culture and the mindset. They got people believing in themselves and the man next to them. Makes you also wonder how things would have gone with Wilks. It also makes me wonder how Evero might do. I’d strongly consider him for the job.

I disagree with Lombardi that Tepper needs someone with "skins on the wall" so he can big-dick Tepper. It doesn't matter who Tepper hires if he's still involved in the decision making. He could hire Belichick to coach the Panthers, but if Tepper is self-scouting the draft picks and making his recommendations to the coach, it's not going to change anything. It's going to create problems with autonomy and trust from the very beginning. 

Where I do agree with Lombardi is the fact that Frank Reich was a bad hire and he was probably going to fail either way. Reich was a broken coach who changed literally nothing that caused his failure with the Colts. Pile on the fact that Tepper was heavily involved in trading up and picking the QB they drafted, and it was a recipe for disaster. 

I'm confident the defense consistently out performs the offense because Tepper has little to no involvement in it. He never mentions defense or his involvement in it. His pet project is the offense and finding a franchise QB. 

Bottom line, Tepper needs to get out of the on-field operations and focus on the team off the field. He needs to find a top tier president of football operations and let them run the show. The practice facility fiasco emphasizes the fact Tepper has lost focus on the areas of the team he should be focused on.

i may be "smarter" and a whole lot more educated than the folks who work for me, but when there's an issue that's in their area of expertise and experience and that's part of their job...i am always going to defer to them and let them handle the situation the way they think best. put it in their hands and trust they get the job done. why? because i know they know their job better than i do. if they need help deciding what to do, i'll talk them through it, but i'll always let them own it. if it works, they get the credit. if it doesn't...well...i can take a slap on the wrist better than they can so i take it. but the point is i let my people do their jobs their way as long as they give me the end results i need.

Perfectly sensible.

I've said before if I hire a guy to build my house, I can tell him what kind of rooms and such I want but I'm not gonna tell him how to build them.

(sure as hell not gonna try and build them myself)

The thing that bothers me most about the way the organization has operated since Tepper has taken over is that every move screams "we're smarter than you and we know it." The arrogance that's in the building for an organization that's 30-63 since Tepper bought the team is astounding. Whether it's trading up for DJ Johnson, taking a long snapper, paying a RB, etc - they're clueless. If this disaster hasn't shown he clearly isn't smart at this football thing, then this franchise is going to continue to lose at an alarming rate.
