Jeff Davidson - Next Browns HC?

Lerner thinks that hiring anyone who used to work for the Pats is his ticket to success so I wouldn't be surprised if he did it, but I don't think JD is ready for a HC gig either, And he seems intelligent enough to know that (unlike Mangini). He was selected by Fox partially because he shared his commitment to the running game, so people need to understand that there is nothing wrong with a HC selecting his coordinators based on shared mindset. In fact, what sense would it make for a HC to select a coordinator or any other assistant if they were diametrically opposed to the HC's philisophy (as it would be if Martz were the OC in Carolina)? That said, Fox shouldn't be meddling too much with playcalling within the framework of that shared philosophy, and we don't know if he does or doesn't so I can't hang him for that.

The only job you can't block an assistant from interviewing for is a head coach job. If the job isn't a substantial promotion but is more a lateral move then you can refuse permission.

I doubt if he would leave short of a head coaching job and frankly there is little reason to believe he could do it at this point.

This is true in theory, but in practice team's typically allow assistant coaches the oppurtunity to advance even if it isn't to a head coaching position. It is more of an unspoken rule that you don't block a coach from trying to advance his career, and when teams DO block them it is frowned upon and reflects poorly on the ownership.

The Panthers did it just this past offseason. The Bengals wanted to interview Lewis for their DC position but the Panther blocked the request. Lewis signed a contract just like many other assistants. If they want to be able to interview for other positions then only sign year to year contracts.

wow...i'm actually surprised at how many of my fellow Panther fans actually LIKE Jeff...i remember last season, and the year b 4 that ...him being BOOOOO'd at the home games...hell I EVEN BOOO'd him. Let my wife tell it....i've been bad mouthin' this guy now for about 4 years. I luv all y'all like play cousins..but i don't life Jeff D...i think if we had ANYBODY else as our OC , they'll utilize the talent better than he does..and be more confident in that talent.

12 - 4

2nd Seed in NFC.

Just saying....

wow.

um. where do I start.

1. 4 years was it? He's only been here since last season when he had to deal with 4 different quarterbacks. One being David Carr..

2. You'd love Sean Payton as our offensive coordinator. He'll use Williams as a Reggie Bush type player!

3. I think the guy you really disliked was Dan Henning, he was fired before last season and even then, I think of it as merely a scapegoat firing. Not only that but his playcalling started to steer away from what Fox wants to do: Run the ball.

4. Are you serious? This season has been his first true chance of using his arsenal and we've gotten at least 28 points every game since the Detroit game. That's more than enough to win games in the NFL.

I don't think PantherDFense is a fan at all. At least not one of the Panthers anyway.

Kudos to Seamonk for continuing to breakdown that post. I gave up after the "4 years" with Davidson reference.

Even if you are a pseudo-fan and don't keep up with the coaches you should have remembered the relentless verbal crucifixions of Dan Henning, his exodus, the hiring of his long-awaited replacement, and the incessant gushing on top of gushing about how "zone blocking" was going to change everything in Charlotte.

PantherDFense = not a fan

i'm not even going there..u got me with him just getting on board and hatin' on Dan Henning (DID know that and DID 4get) . I was ACTUALLY trying 2 be funny considering our problems with an OC. Basing JD off of 1 year won't do it 4 me, and honestly from what i've seen, i'm STILL not comfortable with our OC . OBVIOUSLY Carolinarolls is tryin' 2 strike a nerve , and i'm simply not going there 4 the fact that i was diggin' the Panthers when CAROLINAROLLS was in the baby swing...listen....as u hear me brush u're dirt off my shoulder.

Yeah, and so do a hundred other posters here who would miss the hell out of him after he's gone.

The guy has a pretty impressive body of work, like it or not. :)

I sure as hell wouldn't miss him. If playing defenders 20 yards off the receivers, making blitzes so obvious, and not changing the scheme when the offense finds a vulnerability classifies as a "pretty impressive body of work", then I'll agree. Until then I still think of him as a giant Turd holding our defense back.
