What's needed at QB?

Mr. Scot

The is no way Fox is going to draft a QB. That would mean he would have to actually work on a QB, which he doesn't have a clue about which is why Fox requires a QB with 'intangibles' IMO. This is also his last year and with a new a QB it'll be impossible to improve his resume or chances of being back.

This is a good point.

I'm sure this will draw the ire of many posters, but I really think it would be best if we either let Fox go or extended his contract this year. For a couple years Fox and Hurney have been on the proverbial hot seat, and as a result they've mortgaged our future for the present.

Technically, that's Delhomme, except for the "no aspirations" part, but he wouldn't cause a fuss.

Add in that he already knows the Panthers as well.

Do you want him as "that guy" or do you look elsewhere?

there's nothing i want jake teaching moore.

Oh, and just to note, finding solid starters in second round QBs is VERY difficult. I can only think of one or two off the top of my head, the #1 being Drew Brees. Kolb is intriguing, but not a proven starter yet.

Other than those two, I can't think of any other successes.

Not even close...you get about 50% from the first, the rest come from 2nd on and elswhere. Type in a bunch of above average QBs of all time (like 10) and you'll find that only about 50% were drafted first round. Now whether you were talking about right this moment and not 'all time' your probably right.

Most of your backups come from the later rounds but you will be hard pressed to find a good starter outside the first round.

There is a reason that most of the really good QB's come out of the first, and thats the size/arm/smarts that are needed to make NFL D's cover the entire field.

Given that we foolishly extended Jake, to try to fix his ego, we are in a terrible situation.

Last year I was a proponent of drafting a gifted QB, or acquiring one, and letting him sit behind Jake for a couple of seasons. Obviously I was wrong in my thinking that Jake would at least be average for 2 or 3 more seasons...

Either we trade a pick or player for a QB that is sitting behind an unquestioned starter, or we gamble and keep Moore in there with Jake teaching him how to be a "pro".

We have far too long overlooked the QB position, and now it is biting our asses.

Delhomme just needs to get the hell out of the way. He needs to stay the hell away from coaching any one too. Moore doesn't need to pick up any of Jake's bad habits. If he doesn't retire, cut him. He's done playing in the NFL and we pay him the same whether we cut him or keep him. Might as well cut him rather than him seeing the field again and hurting the team or coaching and hurting Moore.

Bring in a vet QB and draft a QB mid-late round and let them compete with Moore for starter.

What do I want? A time machine to go kidnap one of Peyton or Eli's kids right before they are drafted.

What can we get? Complicated. I think the best option is to start Moore with a vet backup competing with Delhomme. Draft a guy based on his talent (for a change) and develop him. There are some guys that will be available later in the draft. I'm tired of mortgaging the franchise, so I don't want to give up what would be necessary to get Bradford or Clausen.

You're actually wrong KK but I think you will be happy that you are.

Delhomme would make less money if cut before March 5th than he would if he were to play the season. And while I don't have the details or a link (before someone asks for it), based on comments made by Hurney earlier in the season I would guess that it would be by a lot. We all know how easy it is to pile on to Fox and Hurney but they aren't idiots and this contract was rewarding only if Jake was on the team.

- a solid backup (Moore is established, just get a good backup)

Yea, I'm going with this. I'm pretty much convinced with what I've seen from Moore and think he's capable of leading this team. I think he's basically the "old Jake", but he's capable of being much more. I think in a couple of years, he's going to be great. Get him a solid backup, and we're good to go.

This. I dont want Delhomme teaching Moore a damn thing. We need to cut Jake and get a solid backup.

Guess it depends on how you define success. But non first round current QB's with success Tom Brady, Matt Hasselbeck, Kurt Warner, Brett Farve, Tony Romo, and Matt Schuab to name a few.

From a historical perspective, Joe Montana, Joe Theismann, and Roger Staubach all turned out pretty well.

There is also a pretty long list of teams that wasted first round picks on QB's that turned out to be not worth the effort.
