You're David Tepper, how do you structure a deal/offer to get Ben Johnson's attention?

Ben Johnson will have WAY better options this off-season:

Bears with 2 first round picks in the top 5, DJ Moore, familiar with the division, cap space, tradeable assets in Fields, an improving defense

Chargers - Top 10 QB, top 10 RB that can catch out of the backfield, top safety, great pair of DEs, top 15 WR. He can turn them from pretenders to contenders OVERNIGHT

With that said, any of these franchises will fork out money, so if you're Tepper and have a lifeless team with poor draft capital and no franchise players what's your pitch

Money: He has LOTS of it and has not been shy to flex that wallet, current highest paid coach is Bill B at $20 million a year

Commitment: he needs to know he won't be a one and done head coach, that to overhaul this is gonna take 3 years minimum

Control: he needs to know you won't be meddling with every decision or passing post it notes from your tecmo bowl evaluation

My offer is:

7 years, $210 million with Ben to pick his GM and it's only Ben and the GM who have final personnel matters

You have shown commitment financially by the annual rate and length of the contract, you've also shown you won't meddle in personnel or pick another flunk GM

None of that matters, only the GM/coach relationship

If you want Ben Johnson you get his choice for GM as well

Think he'll have to offer something like a 6-year, $60m fully guaranteed deal with no offsets.

$30m/year is ridiculous lmao. The highest paid coaches make something like $12-15m/year and that includes multi-time SB winning HCs.

Bill B is $20 a year, you want Ben and it's a poo show here, you're going to have to make him highest paid in the league. This is going to be the Deshaun Watson coaching edition sweepstakes

Per this link the only coach estimated to be making $20m or more is Belichick who has 6 rings and 9 SB apperances: https://www.sportico.com/personalities/people/2023/highest-paid-coaches-2023-belichick-payton-popovich-1234747782/

Every other NFL coach above $10m/year has either won or made a Super Bowl appearance (Reid, Harbaugh, Tomlin, Shanahan, McVay, Carroll, Payton).

As much as Tepper may want Ben Johnson, he's not going to give him a deal with an AAV greater than $10m as a first time HC.

Carolina needs a been there, done that coach.  some one who has built a team and culture from the ground up.  Belichick, Harbough,  etc.  even if they dont come in and win a superbowl, the structure and frame work they establish, carolina can build off of for years.  If only Tepper had given Sean Payton a life time supply of juicy fruit.

I put it in a thread last night, but here's what I'd do.

First step is there has to be a per year number that he'd agree to, but I won't even guess on that number as pure money alone won't help attract a top candidate, it's the structure of the deal that is needed to entice someone to take on this situation.  While the contract will likely be in the 7 year range, there is a 3 year guarantee of his job status so he knows he won't get axed after 1 bad season of Bryce or a follow up bad season with a rookie QB he drafts to replace Bryce.

He gets 1 completely free season in year 1 to evaluate and make a decision on if he wants Bryce (which will likely end up being a no in the end).

He then gets to select the QB of his choosing with our 2025 pick (or trade for one, whatever he wants to do, and he gets to pick the QB, not Tepper, not a GM).  He then gets 2 FULL seasons to show he is building to something and that he can be competitive moving forward.

That's the crux of the issue, since all HC contracts are guaranteed anyways, how you provide him an actual guarantee that he will get the 3 full years (which is basically the only way to get a highly qualified candidate to be willing to come here).

So there is a poison pill in the contract that if Tepper fires him before the final game of the 3rd season, he not only still gets his full contract paid out, but an immediate $100-200 million payment upon the firing.  You could also put something in there that if he gets a certain number of wins in year 3, the same poison pill clause gets extended to guarantee a 4th season (such as if he gets 7 wins or better in year 3, that clause gets extended for another season).

No, it couldn't stop him from firing him before that point, but no way in hell is he going to fire him and pay that out, it's an essential guarantee of 3 years to show improvement.

Johnson said no last year and the situation is so much worse now. He isn't coming here for any amount of money

Bingo.

people need to stop.  We aren’t getting a big name or highly sought prospect.  Tepper is a terrible owner and the word is out all over the league.

Not that I think he will, but considering he will be a brand new 37 year old HC, what happens in your scenario if he turns out like Arthur Smith or Nathaniel Hackett?

Now, I don’t think he will. I think he will be a very good HC for somebody next season. But there are a few reasons why I don’t think this is the best fit for him or your Panthers.

1- He doesn’t have experience developing QBs. Goff already spent quite a bit of time with McVay, O’Connell, and Taylor before he met up with Johnson.

2- Johnson doesn’t really run the type of offense that Bryce is going to be best suited for. Now, a young innovative mind like Johnson will be able to implement a scheme that wil- but will he want to do that?

3- He is going to have quite a few options to pick from. These options are going to have more talent, resources, and likely better owners. Bringing him “home” isn’t much of a play, he doesn’t seem to have cared about living in Detroit and Miami the last few years.

I think your Panthers need a Harbaugh or Belichick type for a little while. Somebody that can build some type of culture and foundation, even if it means some 7-8 win seasons for a few years and then you guys go get your “Ben Johnson”

I think Johnson is a no-brainer to go somewhere like Washington or Seattle (if Pete retires) since there are so many key pieces already in play and a fair amount of resources to use.
